Our LG DLE5977W dryer displays Clean Filter when turned on even though filter is clean. When Start button is pushed it hums as if the drive motor can't turn the drum, though the drum spins freely by hand. Is this a clear case of a failed drive motor or are there other things I should check before spending money on a new motor? Update: I found the service manual in a post here and downloaded it. It explained how to put the dryer in diagnostic mode, as follows: 1. Start with dryer plugged in and completely off (display dark). 2. Press "POWER" while pressing "MORE TIME" and "LESS TIME" simultaneously. 3. Press "START/PAUSE" to cycle through tests, in this order: a. Electric control & temp sensor b. Motor c. Motor + heating element 1 (or gas heat, depending on model) d. Motor + both heating elements e. End test When I got to the motor test the drum turned and everything was fine. When I exited the test the dryer worked normally and the display indicated no problems. As a software guy I suspect LG's software has a bug that makes it lose it's mind. There are more tests, btw, that would be useful in finding a real hardware problem but the part posted here got me past my problem.
I would guess a broken drive belt. Just take top off and check. Two screws on back, pull top back about 2 inches, left off. Belt should be around drum. If belt is loose or gone, it's broken.
Testimonial: "It was the drive motor clutch. The part that holds the springs in place broke, leaving the clutch inoperable. Unfortunately the solution was a new motor, but it was only $100 on Amazon plus 90 minutes of my labor."

This is usually the motor but not always. Remove the belt. Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing. Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.
If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor. If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers, pulley, rear bearing, then reassemble the dryer and try it again. If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor. SOURCE: Dryer won't work, Check Filter light is on
I had exactly the same problem with my newish LG dryer. I deduced that the dryer's computer essentially needed to be rebooted. I pulled the plug for a minute or so, then plugged it back in. It works perfectly now.

no problem with motor or control board. fault is with the motor capacitor only. this is often attached to the motor or near it. the value of the capacitor will be printed on it (usually about 8uf) and you should be able to source from an electrical spares shop

can you hear the motor running? if so its probably a broke belt

SOURCE: Lint Filter Light comes on and cycle is interupted
I just found that the filter itself was not allowing airflow- I tested by blowing through it with my mouth- no airflow. I cleaned it with a high pressure air hose and noticed that the flow is much better now. I cleaned it by hand several times, and washing in water (which may have made theproblem).
