I had the same problem! I just looked up in the manual and the shorcut is menu,8,7,3 to COPY all contacts or menu,8,7,4 to MOVE them (copy keeps the original contacts stored on the handset memory. Now because I can only view the botom right hand corner of my screen I can't be 100% sure what happened next. I pressed (enter/ok). Then could tell I needed to enter a 4 digit code as the layout changed so tried my pin and then 0000. I think 0000 worked and vaguely remeber it as a factory setting security code or summit. Hope it works for you too.
so again I think thats menu,8,7,3,ok,0000,ok......... then wait a few minutes while you imagine the bar scrolling along as the contacts a re copied (took about a minute and a half on mine so maybe wait 3 minutes just to be sure. switch off put ur sim in another phone and see if it worked
if not try your pin in place of "0000"

You have not stated the Brand and the Model of your old phone.
anyway the basic procedure remains the same for every cell phone.
Transfer your all contacts in the old phone to your sim card.
Go to phone book/address book and then contacts.
On the drop down menu you will find 2 options i.e. Copy Sim to Phone and Copy Phone to Sim.
Click on Copy Phone to Sim.
All your contacts will be transferred to Sim.
Remove the sim from the old phone and insert it in the new LG phone.
Repeat the above steps.This time you have to select Copy Sim to Phone.
All your contacts will be stored in the new phone.
