On a 1991 geo metro 1.0L 3 cylinder motor, when doing a upper end rebuild, when putting the valve stem seals back in do the seals go on first then the bottom washer, spring, top washer, then the locks

Because when i took it apart the seal was on top of the bottom washer and to me that doesn't seem right because the seal isn't held in place but with it under the washer then the washer holds it in place

Washer on first as the hole will be the same size as the guide
then the seal then the spring then the spring retainer then the Colettes
if the hole is big enough to fit over the seal , then the seal first as that will hold the washer in position

SOURCE: can't get spring back onto front seal that holds the seal in place

its very hard to do with the front on ,
if you have the top and bottom off you can keep trying
but removing the control panel and front is easier just a bit longer to do.

SOURCE: Lg WD8013f frnt load washer seal broken

The inner spring cable is a tough part to put back on without a special tool.  You're best bet is to remove the front cover of the washer to try and reinstall the seal.  If it doesn't work, you will need to call a qualified LG technician to help you.

SOURCE: replace valve stem oil seals

Make up an airline fitting that will screw into spark plug hole, or buy from autoparts , or tools supply place. You put compressed air in cylinder while changing, which holds valves in place.

SOURCE: Kohler 1-piece flush valve seal replacement.

That is a tricky one. Tighten the tabs, twist into place, then tighten a bit more. They are a pain in the a$$, but with patience you will get it done. Good luck

I have a 1991 geo metro 3 cylinder blue a timing belt is this engine a interference type so that the vavles are broke

No this engine is not supposed to be an interference engine.
So you may not have damaged any pistons or valves.

Car ran well and cruised at 80 easy on interstate getting 30- 35mpg. Had what sounded like lower enging knock/rattel the 4 months I have owned it. Comp. was 190 on #1 & #2 but #3 was 90. On...

If the head gasket did not seal from the previous rebuild the anti freeze could travel across the holes in the gasket when under pressure. The real problem you may be dealing with is a crankshaft that is wandering back and forth. The previous owner fixed the worn parts but may not have fixed the cause of the problem. I believe the lower end knock is probably caused by the wrong size lower connecting rod bearing (another potential disaster). If the car body is in good shape I would search for a good salvage motor or see if there is still a factory rebuild available. From what you describe there is probably no hope for your old engine.

What is the piston ring end gap for a 1991 geo metro 3 cylinder 1liter?

The end gap is derived from the bore size. For the 2.91" (74mm) Geo 3 cyl bore, the top ring end gap is .004" divided by bore, so that is 2.91" / .004 = .012". The second ring and oil ring should be bore divided by .005", so that is 2.91" / .005 = .015". Don't file the springy part of the oil ring, as it is designed to compress and fit snuggly; just file the top and bottom ring that sandwich the springy part.

Geo metro

well if you know it has a blown cylinder they you need to rebuild the motor and that cant be explained over the internet. the easier thing to do is to buy a used motor and replace the whole thing. those motors and small and cheap. you will waste more time rebuilding the motor that you would just getting a cheap used one and replacing it.
