First open up the sound properties icon on the taskbar and verify that nothing is muted. You can download and install the Audio Drivers for the Inspiron 1420 at the link below.

A dell inspiron which is missing sound in the mixer has either another sound device conflicting or missing drivers. To fix it please post your model number or your inspiron build number please.
Try the following*Check weather required driver for your DVD drive is installed or not(in Windows 7 it automatically installs drivers)if yes.......try this..... *If you are using Windows operating systemGo toStart>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Device Manager>select DVD/CD drivers>Right click on your name(Name appears after clicking arrow beside DVD/CD drivers option)Ridht click on your device name>Select enable

It must be a Volume device drive problem,please try to update your volume device drive software,find your original dell Inspiron 1420 volume device driver software or download it from www.dell.com
the speaker would have gone bad.If the external speakers connected are working fine,then the sound card is fine.If the system is still under warranty u should get the speakers replaced.Contact dell tech support for that.
Nothing wrong with my speackers, had them tested. Just can't get no sound, Have tried volume control, this won't move. I just can't do any thing else. Anna Moore
