In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes

There is a pin type lever that you need to move when you want to manually push the mower. Perhaps this has become engaged in the locked position. You can also check this feature in your owner's manual. It is a feature to prevent damage to the transmission.

My Craftsman 42” riding mower runs, but won’t move when I put it in fwd or reverse. The transmission belt doesn’t appear to be broken, and have not had any previous issues like this. Any suggestions?

Make sure the belt is turning. You either have a linkage adjustment or a transmission problem. If it is a hydrostatic transmission make sure it is full of fluid.

Riding Lawn Tractors with Hydrostatic Transmission Tip of the Year

Hello everyone! IF you have a riding mower or tractor with hydrostatic transmission you are going to love this insider's tip. Slightly overfill the transmission. Always keep the fluid level about 1/4 inch above the full line on the dipstick. Once you have done this you will instantly notice that the tractor has more speed in forward and reverse. You will also notice that it has more power when mowing up hill. Doing this solved several problems I was having with low power and also slow reverse. I had adjusted the linkage but it did not solve my problem, adding the additional transmission fluid did. Enjoy your more responsive tractor! Joe

Craftsman ltx 1000 18hp tractor will no longer go forward but runs normal in reverse

First replace the drive belt. (1/2 x 82-1/4) and the V-idler pulley if plastic, Reverse doesn't load the belt as much as forward drive. The reason I suggest replacing the V-idler too is that the plastic wears heavy and the drive belt bottoms out causing slippage.

Then if it doesn't drive forward then you most likely have a bad transmission.

Craftsman riding lawnmower, model #917 259012 hydrostat stopped working

Check belts. Check transmission fluid level if possible. Check linkage between shifter and transmission. Check belt tensioners under unit above deck.

How to fix Stuck in reverse Clutch is Fine.?

Have you tried checking the linkage to the hydrostat/transmission? Are you getting full movement of the lever? If not, it might have just come loose and shifted so you only have reverse. If you have full movement of the lever and the hydrostat has the proper amount of fluid it could be fried. It's hard to tell without diagnosing the linkage. I'd suggest blocking the rear wheels off the ground so you don't run over yourself before you go messing with the linkage.

Linkage inside gear box does not engauge. Mechanics work to the bolt on top of the bottom gear (differential) box. Neither forward nor reverse work.

Most likely a hydrostatic transmission and most likely it is dead. Buy a new one or look around on google and craigslist for a used one. Maker and model number will be printed on top and possibly stamped on the bottom. New hydrostatic transmissions cost more than a new mower.

How do I adjust the speed control handle

Well on my AYP manufactured tractor, which is much like yours but has the name Husqvarna on it, the hydrostatic transmission is shot and it exhibits much the same characteristic. That is no forward nor reverse movement until it gets nearly to the end of its range. The F/R lever on the right side is connected to a much smaller lever on the end of a shaft which goes into the transmission. What I would do is check the linkage to make sure that the range of travel on the speed control moves the smaller lever input into the transmission. If the range of travel is the same, you may need a new transmission, they are expensive. If there is some slop in the linkage, you may have another day in the sun. You can google "manual, craftsman, lawn tractor" and find some links to get a manual. What I did was find another lawn tractor as the cost of repair far exceeded the value of the old mower.

I have a Stanley 17.5 hp 42"cut riding mower, purchased in 2002. Lately it has started to move slower, especially on grades, and really slow in reverse. It has a hydrostatic transmission. Are there...

Sounds like its slipping..
Have you checked the hydro fluid ?
Are there any leaks ?
Could be an adjustment in the pedal..
Look at all the pedal linkage and you might find some adjustment there..
Or - maybe a moving part is waring out in the linkage..

Hope this helps !!
