Hi saabangerman
The unit sounds like it has a take up clutch or takeup idler problem. Check all the drive assemblies in the unit. Remove the cover from the front of the transport inside the cassette well, and check the condition of the idlers and reel base drives. The counter belt can also gatherup and prevent the takeup reel from working correctly, or fire the auto stop mechanism preventing it from playing, although that sounds to be ok in this case as the unit will FF and REW ok. The takeup drive is supplied by a different drive idler as it requires much lower and more controlled torque. This unit was always considered to be a great tape deck and is well worth a bit of attention for restoration. You can get a new belt kit for $19.00 from here

The deck will need new belts and idler drives cleaned and serviced, and perhaps some idler tyres replaced. You can get a belt kit from these guys. replacing them is not such a difficult job if you have some mechanical aptitude. Just take it slowly, and focus on getting the transport out of the unit.

The problem here is that the unit is stuck in a partial position. The "reset" by unplugging and plugging back in usually causes the unit to reset to a known position. If there is no activity (no motor sound), it will need to be opened up and reset manually. If you hear the motor running for a short period, it is attempting to reset, but the belt is most likely worn or broken. These units are relatively simple, but a bit tricky to dis-assemble. This repair should not require anything other than a belt or 2. Figure on $3-$10 for parts plus the local labor rate for the repair.

I had the same problem. You probably have to replace the rubber belts.

Thanks Wellington! The leaf switches are ok. I traced the fault to a suspect fusible resistor (R736) located near the power supply. Resistance is down to 1.xx ohms instead of the factory specified 2.2 ohms. I'll post any result as soon as I receive, install & test the replacement part.
