I am trying to charge my "Simple Start" The directions say to Turn the unit On, Connect the 120 V Adapter, Plug the adapter in and push the Recharge Unit push button. The unit will beep once and flash green indicating the unit is charging....
My unit is beeping constantly and the flashing red.
Please help - I want this as an emergency backup for my 75 year old mother's car.
Okay people... this is a long one, but I just did it for two units that were having this problem and it worked both times.
The problem is the unit sat on the shelf and doesn't have enough power to operate its charging cycle.
Take an extension cord and plug in the outlet charger while you also plug it into your cigarette lighter... now attempt to charge it (you will hear the familiar alarm). Now, turn on the LED light... after a short time, turn off the light and the unit will begin to charge regularly. You can then use one of the chargers to finish the job.
By doing this you are providing plenty of power to the battery while the light drains it at a slower rate... kinda forcing the battery to condition/cycle; it's just allowing the battery to take the charge. Hope this helps.
Damit!!!! I bought 2 of them. Each from different companys. They both wont charge?????
Everybody, try this. Had the exact same problem on the 2 that I just bought. Tried it your way and it didn't work. So charged both in the garage with the alarms blaring away. You could still hear them with the garage door closed. The next morning, one was quiet and flashing the green light after 12 hours. The other was still blasting away but ******* after another 5 hours. Same thing happenned, it finally ******* with green light flashing. The green lights for both eventually stopped flashing. I assume both units are now charged. I have not used them to boost any battery yet. What a damn hazzle!

So today is Jan 17, 2009 and I had the same problem. But, being the genius I am (snicker) I realized it's zero degrees outside literally and the unit was ice cold, and feeling the unit I realized it is true....probably the mechanizms inside were frozen. So I did the unplug thing for a couple of minutes....plugged it in again....and then layed it on it's side and banged with the palm of my hand the frozen side. Lo and behold the thing slowed down it's annoying sound...and then the sound stopped ! The green light is blinking like it's supposed to, and the noise stopped.....and I'm keeping it on it's flat side with the coldest part facing upwards...........and WARNED my husband NOT to go near it LOL. Yep, it takes a woman to solve this problem (snicker snicker tee hee).
Once the unit is plugged in to charge, does it have to be turned on or off
Mine seemed to be doing the same thing, So I changed the order T Connect the 120 V Adapter, Plug the adapter in, Turn the unit On,, and push the Recharge Unit button. The unit will beep once and flash green indicating the unit is charging....??? worked for me

Same problem here. Worse - I bought three of them for Christmas and none of them will charge. The local B&D service center was no help. Their only suggestion was to exchange all three units "to try a different batch".
I am having the same problem - I got it last year, and it worked fine. Now that its getting colder, I figured it was time to recharge it and put it in the car - now it won't charge
I purchased the black and decker simple start on ebay brand new. It wont charge at all. All I get is a solid red light when I plug in the adapter. The unit never shows a blinking green light which would indicate a charging status. I have tried everything and I read the manual over and over again. PLEASE HELP!!!!
Exactly the same problem here! Is there any solution to this, mine is a gift I bought for my dad last christmas. It sat on the shelf until a couple of weeks ago (1year). I followed the instructions to the letter, with the same results of all the people here, constant beeping, no charging.
Unit keeps beeping.
Have had my B& D simle start and had it work 2/3 times. Now, it won't charge, just beeps continuously with the battery status showing green, but it won't go into vehicle boost either. Worse yet, we bought several for the family and none of them will work now. Have tried different power cables
Same problem. I bought mine last weekend. It does not charge when using the 120VAC adapter. After following the instructions, the Recharge Unit LED is a steady green...it does not "flash once" as instructions say...and the unit beeps almost continuously. The power cord is fine.
Things thing is ****!!!!
The problem seems to occur if the battery is fully depleted. I bought mine and got it charged initially and set the unit in the back of my wifes vehicle. She never used it and did not keep it charged as I requested her to do, which meant to plug it in once every few months to make the charge was full. I had told her its the same as keeping your spare inflated, because to have it with no air will do you no good.
The book says the unit is sent partially charged and many many times states to keep it fully charged, charge after each use and so on.
If the battery fully depletes it seems to have this problem.
Just Google "Black and Decker Simple start beep" Â b/c mine is beeping continuously too. Â Never used it before, just tool it out of the box to charge it. Â Glad I found this site instead of listening to it beep for 15 hours.
Same issue here. I could never get the green light to blink showing the unit was charging Either just red lights and/or continual infernal beeping, and or a steady green light! I think there is breaker which shuts something inside down, but I don't know how to reset it. Still trying to trouble shoot it. Maddening cuz I really needed this to work.
Here is the response that I got from Black and Decker today. Doesn't satsify me.
Thank you for your interest in our products. Please follow the instructions in the 120 Volt AC Recharge section of your owner’s manual. If the unit starts to beep continuously, let it beep for about 1 minute, then turn the unit off, and then unplug the charger from the unit and then the wall outlet. Allow a full minute between redoing the charging process. Eventually, the unit should begin to charge. If still experiencing difficulties with the unit beeping after about 10 attempts, we recommend bringing the unit back to the retailer for an exchange.
I bought two of them and have the same problem with both of them. What should I do?
I had the same problem; incessant beeping and not charging.
What I did was return the item to Lowe's for an exchange. But this is very important: Check the DATE on the box before you buy! The one I returned had 2006 stamped on the box; I made a point NOT to get another one with 2006 stamped on the box. The one I brought home had 2007 on the box, which worked just fine.
I just bought this product at target yesterday and it had the same problem with the continuous very annoying beeping. I thought that it must just be bad and i exchanged it for a different one. The new one did the same damn thing! I don't recommend ever buying this pile of ****. I am definitely returning it and getting my money back. I am looking at getting the Wagan self charge auto jumper instead.
I have the same problem.
I press the green light and the unit beeps constantly.
Black and Decker did a poor job designing and testing this product.
Same Problem as mine, I can not describe how unsatisfied I am with what should be such a simple product, plug it into the wall and it should charge, im' not sure how they messed that up
We have the same problem,...... a hardware store that bought 100 of them, so far all are causing a problem with a 2007 date on the box. Is the Internal battery dead from long shelf life and need to be recharged somehow or are these things toast. ???
I can't get the unit to charge at all.
junk
I am charging the unit for the first time. Ruffly how long should it take?
