Hello beth ( a 12 year old monitor , no PC stated or OS)

we need to know first what PC this is.
it has name (HP) and model, like DV7-1234us
my guess is a DESKtop made from 1984 to now. endless types.
the V17 , does have speakers, (if opted day 1)

this means it has speaker cable, all by its self.
that must be plugged in.
The VP17 does not make sound it only makes it louder and sends it to the speakers, inside the VP17.
The PC makes all sounds, never the monitor,
The PC changes volume and so does the VP17 , independantly.
that means if the PC sounds is at 0, zero, the VP17 tries to make
0 sound louder, and fails, 0 times anything is still zero.
im guess.
Turn up the sound in the PC, using windows, controls
then connect the monitor to the PC green jack sound;
using the correct cable.
then turn up the sound on the VP17
and bingo sound.
use the built in sounds in windows to test sounds
control panel, click sound, icon the tab sounds and test button.

NO OS stated is this Windows XP?
no photos present of red/white icon, so?
my guess is you have sound turned off in the PC, so click
the speaker ICON in the task bar, bingo sound?
HP vp17 monitor pushed sound button on bottom of monitor no sound. pushed again nothing. have a red and a white sound icon on screen. how do I get my sound back.

SOURCE: hp 1730 monitor will not turn on

There are multiple circuits for this model. I suspect your model is PE1237. If so this model frequently has bad solder connections at the AC socket. Also capacitor 2119 or capacitors 2041 & 2031 can cause no power up. They normally are bulging if bad.
If your model is PE1238 (BenQ), you may see bulging capacitors in the power supply.(1000uf/25v)

Will a hp vp17 monitor work on a compaq presario?

All monitors will work on any pc/mac computer.
The only concern might be how old is the monitor (low resolution) connected to a brand new computer (high resolution). But it usually auto adjust at windows boot up.
Check the VGA connector (blue) or DVI connector (white) for the monitor matching the pc tower

Will a hp vp17 monitor work on a compaq presario?

Yes, I think so, if the video connections are compatible. If they aren't you may need an adapter, or, there a very slight possibility that they are not compatible. You don't give the model of the Presario

My hp vs 15 displays vertical color stripes that alternate different colors wether its hooked up tp computer or not what is wrong, is it junk

It may sound strange but be absolutely sure the cable is plugged into the monitor. Adapter on the computer. The serial adapter on the back looks just like video. Video actually has a faintly noticeable monitor icon rigtht next to it. Plugging into a serial can eventually blow out your monitor. Also, a.badcable can do the same thing. And if you have messed up the monitor's settings you will see the same

I am running two monitors; a Dell and an HP vp17. The Dell's color looks bright and clear. I am currently using it as my default or number 1 monitor. The HP colors are dull and the photo I am using on...

You will just basically have to go through the menu settings on the monitor and adjust the color, contrast, and brightness. No two brand of monitors are going to be the same. Even different models of the same brand will very.

I have a HP tower and compaq monitor, does this affect the speakers on the monitor? Since I changed the towers out the sound hasn't worked

HP and Compaq are actually now one company. So depending on the age of your tower and the age of the monitor they should be compatible.

First you should check the small speaker icon located in the task bar in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Is there a red circle with a line through it?
First check your connections to the speakers. There are a couple ways to get the audio signal to the speakers so make sure you have a connection that can carry the signal. The primary one is through the Green Audio Out jack on the back of the tower to the Green Audio In jack on the monitor. HDMI cable can also carry a audio signal.

Still no signal?
If not left click the icon and make sure the Mute Box is not checked.

Signal?
If not then right click on the icon. You will be given two choices from a small pop-up dialog box (Win XP and Vista OS), click on Adjust Audio Properties. Click the Advanced Button in the lower right side of the window that opens. Again a small window will open with Speaker Setup choices at the bottom. Go through the list and pick Monitor Mounted Speakers or if Stereo Monitor Stereo Speakers.

If there is a red mark through the icon follow all the steps above.
Remember to reboot your computer after every change.
Additional you may need to go to HP to update your monitor and sound drivers.

In the Adjust Audio Properties, at the top click on the Hardware tab. Now click the Properties button at the bottom. A window will open that should say "This Device Is Working Properly". If not then it's a driver issue. Click on the Driver tab of the same window and click Update Driver button. Sometimes this will work great sometimes not so great and you will need to manually install the drivers.
Let me now if you need any thing clarified or if you are still having trouble after trying the above.
Hope this helps.

Screen Adjustment

On your monitor at the bottom there is 3 buttons. The one all the way to the left is the "menu" button. The next one (going right) is the "NEGATIVE" button. The next one (going right) is the "POSITIVE" button.

You can move your screen around. First, start by pressing the menu button. Then, a menu in blue, with a bunch of little white icons will appear. Next, go over two icons by pressing the positive button twice. Then, proceed to push in the "menu" button again. A bar will appear. By pressing your negative button, your screen will move left. Pressing your positive button will make your screen move right. Adjust your screen until the black on both sides are of even proportion. Then, press the menu button to return to the orginal menu you started at. Proceed to press your positive button two more times. Then, press your menu button. Then, once again, use your positive button, and your negative button to adjust your screen to even out the black on the top and bottom.
