same problem, did a lot of research, no fix found, problem with nero dropping frames and not recovering. xvid codec not the issue, many people have the same problem with nero vision. bummer :(

No and here's why... Java is a programming language; its purpose is to be used to create programs that do useful things, but it is not equipped to do the complex analyses required to convert images to text. What you need is an OCR "image to text" conversion software application. Java is not such an application; it is a programming language meant to be used by programmers in a "platform independent context" (usually the World Wide Web). I suggest searching Google for what you need using these keyword strings: OCR image-to-text software. OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition.

Note that performing OCR on handwritten text is particularly difficult because it is so non-uniform (irregular). open adobe acrobat..not reader, has no ability to create pdf's, and go to file, create pdf, from scanner

You can open your word documents, but not the ones sent by others, and you say you could open them before.
Well, I think the person(s) who sent the word documents before have upgraded to Word 2007. An earlier version will have difficulty in reading newer versions, so requires conversion. First of all, please check with the people who send you the word documents before you reinstall the O/S
Regarding photos, normally you would click on them and they open. But if a photo does not open in this manner, try the following:
Rifht click on the name of the file - you get a popup menu - instead of clicking on OPEN, you click on the OPEN WITH, Now a list of programs will appear which may be able to open your photo. Try each one of them, am pretty sure you will be lucky.
The same method can be used for your Word file as well.
