My kenmore upright freezer model #970-448131 shuts off, then doesn’t turn back on. If I fiddle with the thermostat control, or unplug it and plug back in, it will usually cut back in.

SOURCE: Kenmore Upright Freezer 253.21741104 Loss of Power

Yes, it does have a control board. It is located under the rear of the freezer near the compressor. There was a service bulletin out a few years ago about the exact problem you are having. I will not be able to find out if your freezer falls under this design change until tomorrow when I get on my computer at the shop.
What is happening is the board has a fault in it that won't allow it to come back on sometimes if the power blinks off and back on. I am not sure if the repair credit is still active but we have changed the control boards on many of these units free of charge as recently as a year ago.
I will reply back when I find out for sure.

SOURCE: FREEZER ALARM WILL NOT SHUT OFF

You can try 2 things. Unplug it for about 2-3 minutes and then replug it. It should reset itself. You can silence the alarm or muffle it. Silencing it should be hard. Disconnect it from its source. You may want to find out why it is alarming constantly. Have you called Sears and asked them?

SOURCE: Hot exerior walls in a brand new Kenmore 28042 upright freezer

There should not be a fire hazard but you should be concerned that the freezer could break down if it is not allowed to vent the heat it produces. The freezer is not intended nor designed to be enclosed The manual must indicate specifications for minimum clearances for rear, top and sides, and may even be indicated on the big yellow sticker on the inside of the door. The clearances must be respected or again, the unit will fail, and the warranty may be voided in such cases.

OFF indicates that the Temperature Control is switched Off.

Pressing the Up or Down Buttons should change the display back to the Temperature Display and allow you to set the required Temperature.

I moved my upright freezer so I unplugged it , moved it and plugged it back in and it stopped working. I left it unplugged overnight, plugged it back in, same result. Any suggestions?

Maybe it is in the middle of a 21 minute defrost cycle? Is the fan running? Sometimes the defrost timer gets hung in defrost. If that is fine I would see if 120 volts is getting to the relay on the compressor. Sometimes an older temp control will die if fiddled with. Did you turn it before moving the freezer? Those are some things I would check. Sometimes wires get yanked out of place when you move an appliance so check that as well. Post your model number and I might have a service manual you can download OR just go to my website and find one HERE

My Kenmore Upright Freezer Model 25326432100 flashed "ER."

My freezer was purchased in February, 2004. It is a self defrosting freezer but ice has started forming along the bottom shelf and back wall. Also, after cleaning the freezer the other day it has stopped clycing. The freezer will stop running only if I turn it down to the #1 setting and then it will not come back on. If I turn it up to a higher setting the compressor will not stop running. It ran for over 24 hours and would not cycle unless I turned it off or set it at the #1 setting. When I unplugged it and pulled it away from the wall, there was a green water spot the size of a dinner plate underneath the freezer. Help!! Very Unhappy this freezer is only 6 years old. S in Phila.

Ice under the cover

You can use a hairdryer to speed it up but you need to fix the defrost sytem.
How to check everything http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Freezer compressor runs steady & getting -30F

You probably have a defective thermostat or sensor for reading the temperature.

Freezer has frost in back- frig not coolling

You have a defrost parts issue.
Unplug the fridge. Remove the back freezer panel and check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat.
Without a model number I can not tell you where the defrost timer is.

Kenmore freezer is not cooling

Listen for some type of noise from the back lower part of the freezer. This could indicate a problem with the compressor. It is not a fast fix problem. Get your frozen foods to a cold temperature. If the compressor is running and you are not getting the cooling your system could have lost its refrigerant charge. If the compressor is cool and not running check the temperature control. It may have failed. Unplug the power to the freezer and remove the temperature control. Jumper the two main wires that attach to the temperature control and insulate them with electrical tape. Plug the freezer back in and the compressor should start and cool. If this makes it run replace the thermostat.

Freezer stopped working

A no power to the compressor is a good sign as far as being repairable is concerned. Locate the temperature control. Unplug the freezer and jumper the two main wires that connect to the control. Plug it in and if the unit runs replace the thermostat.

Freezer won't run

There is no reset switch. There is a thermal overload protector mounted on the compressor. Does the compressor hum and then give a click sound. If so your compressor has failed. If the compressor is cold (Room Temperature) and it does not try to run your thermostat may be bad. If so remove the temperature control and jumper the two main wires that connect to the control. Unit should be unplugged to do this operation. Insulated the wires so they do not contact any metal surface. Plug the freezer back in. If it runs and cools replace the thermostat.
