SOURCE: Oven wont light

Mine did that and I found the ignitor for the oven was bad. It was the "glow" type for pilotless ignition and it was burned out. It is supposed to glow bright red and the gas comes on and the oven will light. It was easy to tell that it was bad. But to check it I swapped the broiler ignitor with the oven ignitor and the oven worked.

The glow thing lights but why not the gas oven?

Lol...the glow thing? Heh, its called a glow bar--I need the make/model number to help you more accurately--how old is the unit? If the glow bar is worn out, a classic symptom is that the center glows but not the rest of the heat material--when operating correctly, it's so bright you almost can't look at it. To troubleshoot one accurately, you will need a voltage/ohm clamp-on meter for reading amperage. NORMALLY, a working glow bar uses approx 4 amps of current, the gas valve senses this current draw and opens, letting in gas for ignition. You will have to have access to the wires going to the bar. Set the meter for amps and clamp it around one of the wires. Turn on the oven and check the current draw. If you are hesitant about doing any of this, call for service! The problem could also be a defective gas valve, broken wire, loose connection. If your stove has some years on it, and the glow bar has never been replaced, I'd start there--most of the glow bars I've encountered are somewhere around 100.00 give or take. THEY ARE DELICATE. Don't drop it, hit it, or touch the resistive glow bar material--it will break in a heartbeat(ask me how I know this!) I hope I helped you!

My stove will bake but will not broil. I figured it needs a new broiler element but can't find the part. would it be listed under another name and is it easy to install. I should also get a new glow bar...

first off you need the model number to get the right parts,if it's a stove with the burners on top open the bottom draw and get the model number off the frame, call your parts store and tell them if it's gas you need a broil ignitor if it's electric you need a broil element, and yes it's easy to do,make sure you unplug it or go to the fuse box to shut down the power first.if you sent the model number i could give you the part number and tell you what to do

Magic chef self ignitor top,, how do u get the oven to work.. is it self ignite too. i turn on oven ger a glow in the oven,, dont know the model ,,older stove. good shape. bought house with gas stove...

If the glow bar is glowing and the oven doesn't come on in about 30 - 45 seconds.... it probably is the glow bar that needs to be replaced. BUT it could be the oven valve. Usually it is the glow bar.
The glow bar is wired in series with the oven valve and even if it is glowing it may not be sending the correct voltage through to the oven valve. To change the glowbar... unplug the appliance, unscrew 2 screws holding the metal bracket to the burner and remove the ignitor. You can cut the 2 white wires going to the ignitor and use ceramic wire nuts with the new ignitor.

My stove does not light. THe brolier and the burners work fine

Hello, This is going to be a problem with your igniter/glow bar. Over time these get old and although you may see it glowing iit still may be bad. Your igniter should glow a brillient yellow and should ignite the gas within 15 seconds of the valve opening.

here is a link showing pictures of typical igniters.

Getting to the Pilot

Your model JGBP28DED2WH uses spark ignition on the stove top burners, and a glow bar ignitor, part number WB2X9154 for the oven and broiler. To get to the bake ignitor if oven will not light: Take the racks out of the oven. Remove oven floor by removing two screws at back of oven floor and lifting floor. Remove the square metal flame spreader to get to the burner / ignitor assembly. (note: The ignitor may still glow when you try it, but usually is still the problem)

Gas stove

The JGRP17 (not a full model number) does not have a pilot light. It uses glow bar ignitors. Watch the burner at the top of your oven when you turn on broil. After a short time the glow bar ignitor begins to glow, and a short time after that the broiler burner should ignite. The same thing should happen with the oven burner under the floor of the oven when you attempt to bake. If the igniter does not glow, or glows and burner does not light, replace ignitor. (looks like part # WB2X9154)
