Cylinder compression, 170--225 psi
100 psi min
The reading on all cylinders should be within 25% of each other.

IT is not "what should it be," it is what is the difference between all the cylinders in the engine. You are looking for a bad cylinder in comparison to all of the others. Lets say they are all at 160 except one that is 20 pounds lower, that one should be checked closer to see why. Even 20 lbs is marginal so you might want to use a cylinder leak down test instead of a compression test.

The 1 6 5 4 3 2 firing order for my 1989 Dodge Dakota 3.9 engine made it backfire. Is it possible that some of these engines may have a different firing order?

original-undefined-undefined-0.jpg All the diagrams I see for the 3.9 show the same. However, some show a 60 degree advance in orientation of the cap, i.e. the number 1 position is at number 2. Try moving the wires counter clockwise one position.

If you began with a non running engine, I suggest you manually bar over the crankshaft until cylinder 1 is at TDC of the compression stroke. Then remove the distributor cap. The rotor should be pointing directly at distributor tower number 1 position.

1989 dodge dakota pickup hard to start when hot and sometimes dies out while i am driving an plenty black smoke comes out the exhaust pipe

You should start by doing a compression test on the engine. They are loaner tools from autozone. Once you do that, if your compression between cylinders varies ~20psi, there is an internal problem with your engine. Could be worn seals or rings.
