If the garmin can reach satellites in North America, it will reach satellites anywhere in the world as long as it has a clear line of site to the satellites. Depending where you are, the satellites can be higher or lower in the sky. This means that the garmin in your vehicle may not be able to see the satellites how you have it positioned in your vehicle. Try finding the satellites outside of your vehicle while in Europe. If you can, then the problem is positioning in your vehicle. The satellites are all the same kind no matter where you are.

Henry,
You cannot replace American maps with European maps. Garmin does this in order to protect the European retailers. The European SD card eliminates the need to load the maps into the 660, however, if you need to use the card slot to store extra data such as MP3s then you might be better off buying the 670.

You HAVE to go through software support as this is an issue with the map. They told me it is because the map KEY is wrong, it is only for the united states, but the map is ALL of north america. The wait time is incredibly long, I have been waiting for over an hour, such bad service
I just got off the phone with tech support. They have a very
complicated fix that involves remote accessing into your computer and
editing files, etc. They said it would take over an hour and a half, I declined.
The problem apparently is that the nuvi 200/205 can't support canada, but
the maps contain canada = problem. and btw, i downloaded "City
Navigator Lower 49 States+PR NT 2010.10, Deluxe, Apr 09" and got the
same problem. this filename ends in a "B", apparently that's the
"fixed one" but acc tech support it's only fixed in the sense that they
can waste over an hr w' u fixing it, whereas the older files are
unfixable.
I'm just gonna wait til they really fix it and upload those files.
Hope that helps.

It will depend on how much memory you have in your Garmin. If you have maps that you want to keep then I would download those first and then add in the Ireland maps. Or wait until you leave to add in Ireland. I believe the Garmin will tell you if there isn't enough room to add in Ireland.

If you have the map downloaded from the garmin website to your computer you could remove it and replace it later. However a better option might be to download the map of Europe to your computer and install it to a micro SD card. A 4 Gb card would hold the map of Europe and you don't risk losing your North America map. You can get details of how to set up the map on your micro SD card at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps
While this link is mainly about how to update your maps it has a section on setting up maps on an SD/Micro SD card also.
