Is a sewing machine vintage at 20 years or at 40 years old

Debate if a sewing machine is considered vintage at 20 years old or is a sewing machine considered vintage at 40 years old.

  • Anonymous Sep 14, 2018

There is no strict rule for classifying a vintage sewing machine. "Vintage" is a relative term meaning no more than "sort of old". In general, sewing machine enthusiasts classify vintage sewing machines at twenty years old or more. The word "antique" is a different story. Antiques are classified by law because of import/export rules pertaining to duty and assessed value. In Canada, the USA, and most other countries, sewing machines must be 100 years old or more to be antique.

That is probably a personal definition. To me, a vintage machine would be one that is more mechanical than computerized. .Some (below) seem to think it would be a heavy metal mechanical machine. But, to throw a monkey wrench into the discussion, what differentiates vintage from antique?

SOURCE: I have a 40 year old Brother machine. It now runs

Yes, it is the capacitor, or the condenser as you call it has comletely short-circuited electrically bypassing the rheostat, which causes the motor to run at full speed. The cure is simple...cut it out of the circuit. On Singer machines the culprit is usually located inside the foot pedal box...probably on your Brother machine also. They were meant to supress noise from entering into your power line, which causes interference when listening to AM broadcasts, which everyone at the time did. The capacitors themselves will either be in one or two round cans or square flat cans. Simply snip the wires to the capacitor(s) inside the foot controller box and your machine will once again work like normal!

Hi. I hear such wonderful things about these Italian-made Necchi! Here are a couple of places you should be able to find your belt:

Guy Baker at http://www.sewingmachineparts.net/ always seems to have (or be able to get) just about anything.

How old is a Husqvarna Viking 5530. I have the manual and all the parts. It hasn't been used in many years and not sure if it is in good working condition. It was stored in the case.

The manual will usually have a copyright date or printed date something like ' 05/97 '.

The best price I found was $171 on eBay. You can search for prices sold there. I also found this which makes it 50 years old.

Where can I get a Free downloadable manual for a vintage kayaner sew master made in Germany

Unfortunately, it may be challenging to find a free downloadable manual specifically for a vintage Kayanee Sew Master sewing machine made in Germany, as these machines are quite old and documentation may be scarce. However, there are a few options you can try:
  1. Manufacturer's Website: Start by checking if the manufacturer of the Kayanee Sew Master sewing machine has an official website. Sometimes, manufacturers have archived old manuals or provide support for vintage machines.
  2. Sewing Machine Forums: Online sewing machine forums and communities often have sections or members dedicated to vintage machines. You can join these forums and ask if anyone has a PDF or scanned copy of the manual you're looking for. Some popular forums include sewing.patternreview.com and www.quiltingboard.com.
  3. Online Manuals Database: Some websites compile a database of user manuals, including sewing machine manuals. Two popular options are www.manualslib.com and www.manualsonline.com. Search for "Kayanee Sew Master" or browse through the sewing machine section to see if your specific model is available.
  4. Vintage Sewing Machine Groups: Look for Facebook groups or other online communities dedicated to vintage sewing machines. Join these groups and ask if anyone has a manual for your specific model. Some vintage sewing machine groups include "Vintage Sewing Machines" and "Vintage Sewing Machines of Germany."
  5. Local Sewing Machine Repair Shops: Reach out to local sewing machine repair shops or vintage sewing machine specialists. They may have resources or access to rare manuals for older machines. They might be able to provide a photocopy or scanned copy of the manual at a small fee.
Remember to exercise caution when downloading files from websites and ensure your antivirus software is up to date to avoid any potential risks.

How can I found out the year The Elgin High Grade-High Arm Sewing Machine, Model C74237, sold by The Jarrell Co., Rockford, IL, was made?

I searched the internet using https://www.google.com but found little besides images.

The following link suggests when the companies manufactured sewing machines in two or three periods of time:

Purchased a black Keystone vintage sewing machine H66/80900. Made in Japan. Seeking age, manual & threading guide. Thank you in advance for your help.

Wonder if it is a "badged" machine. There were a lot made in Japan post-WWII. I have one called Premier DeLuxe, but they must have had a thousand names for the machines they made. Not worth a lot of money (for selling) but most are good, heavy sewing machines that can stitch through a lot of things current machines can't.

I need machine and bobbin belts foe si get model 15 88. The machine number is JC575560. The machine is about 75 years old. Can you help me?

This is a good place to order vintage parts. I purchase all my vintage parts from them unless they do not carry what I am looking for. I find the prices lower from there than most other places. You should have no problem with the parts you are looking for.

Bernina 1010 (approximately 20 years old): the bobbin winder has stopped rotating- only a turn or so and then stops

Hello, from one sewer to another, a machine that is 20 years old does need a professional tune up from time to time. If you can, take it to a sewing machine store or a sew/vac store to get a professional cleaning and tuning. There are manuals on how to do this, but it is best to leave it to a pro. I own a number of vintage machines and I can tell you, I have wasted countless hours trying to do it myself until I found a pro in my area who sell vacuum cleaners and sewing machine. I found out that machines, like cars, need tune ups. Happy Sewing!
