Debate if a sewing machine is considered vintage at 20 years old or is a sewing machine considered vintage at 40 years old.
That is probably a personal definition. To me, a vintage machine would be one that is more mechanical than computerized. .Some (below) seem to think it would be a heavy metal mechanical machine. But, to throw a monkey wrench into the discussion, what differentiates vintage from antique?

SOURCE: I have a 40 year old Brother machine. It now runs
Yes, it is the capacitor, or the condenser as you call it has comletely short-circuited electrically bypassing the rheostat, which causes the motor to run at full speed. The cure is simple...cut it out of the circuit. On Singer machines the culprit is usually located inside the foot pedal box...probably on your Brother machine also. They were meant to supress noise from entering into your power line, which causes interference when listening to AM broadcasts, which everyone at the time did. The capacitors themselves will either be in one or two round cans or square flat cans. Simply snip the wires to the capacitor(s) inside the foot controller box and your machine will once again work like normal!

There is no strict rule for classifying a vintage sewing machine. "Vintage" is a relative term meaning no more than "sort of old". In general, sewing machine enthusiasts classify vintage sewing machines at twenty years old or more. The word "antique" is a different story. Antiques are classified by law because of import/export rules pertaining to duty and assessed value. In Canada, the USA, and most other countries, sewing machines must be 100 years old or more to be antique.
