Thanks typrice, I appreciate the assistance; I had actually done that when I first got the error message. I actually found out this model of the finepix doesn't read San Disk brand cards. I had to purchase smart media or microdrive, go figure a picky camera. :)

I've bought a SanDisk ExtremeIII 4GB CFI card. Ofcourse, at the beginig nothing worked. Camera format command worked neither (initializing problem,...). I then formated my card through a car reader on fat16 and now everything works. Just make this command: format <volume>: /FS:FAT. After checking and formathing the card, you will be asked to go on by 64K size of cluster. say Yes.

I have a fujifilm finepix s602z digital camera and got a new 4gb compactflash, platinum 2 80x card but when you turn camera on it says card not initialized. how do i initialize the card so i can use the...

I have the same camera with the same problem. You can try formatting the card using the camera. With the camera set as if you are going to look at what's on the card, press the Menu/OK button. Move up to the word Format, press Menu/OK button, FORMAT OK? should display. Press Menu/OK button. This will format your card. Unfortunately, I think there is something wrong with my camera. Still getting 'card not initialized'.

Initialize memory card in fuji s602 digital camera

install the card, turn the camera on, go into the menu and find format. It will tell you that when you format you will also erase the contents of the SD card. Click yes and format the card. Thats it. Joe

Can't initialize SanDisk Ultra II for S7000

try formatting it in the computer, then initializing it in the camera.
It's possible that the camera can only handle memory up to 1Gb. Try a 1g CF card.

Can't initialize SanDisk Ultra II for S7000

It looks as though the camera cannot support memory as high as 4GB. Capacities above 2.2 GB require that your camera supports "FAT32", and S7000 does not support FAT32.

Fuji finepix s602

Usually a bad card in my experience - I'm too tight to buy decent cards, and quite a few have given me problems. Luckily they're quite cheap nowadays!!

You could try using a PC with card reader to format them first, and cleaning the contacts carefully.

Hope this helps.
