I just replaced the power supply unit on my TV, but when I connect it to the power, the power light will flash on and off for a few minutes, before staying lit. The TV will still not turn on.

I had a similar problem where the TV would turn on then shutoff when bumped or over time. The clue was a "tick" sound when it shutoff. Unplugging and reconnecting the power cord go it going again for a few minutes anyway.

I took the unit apart and found the solder connection on the power supply unit was cracked where the main transformer attaches. The solder connection joins the PC board. I suspect the weight causes the joint to stress crack. This is easy to fix by removing the power supply and touching up the solder connections around the transformer. I'd check this first as it is very difficult to locate power supplies and other parts.

no it sounds like you probably didnt need a new power supply but simply needed to check your fuses this error normally occurs when a fuse or capacitor has blown and will either be really cheap or really expensive to fix depending on which it is the fuse change should be possible on your own but running a diagnostic to find out which circuit has a blown unit would require some technical assistance and tools

Because the capacitors in the PSU retain a charge, the LED lights will glow after the power is switched off, these will fade out after a few seconds.

It would appear that at first glance, the PSU is indeed bad and the only way to eliminate this is to replace it with a known working one (I'm also assuming that the 4 pin yellow and black CPU plug that comes off the PSU is plugged into the motherboard?)

If this works than it was your PSU

If it does not work, there are several other possible reasons why this is happening:
Before doing the tests below, physically inspact the motherboard. Look for blown or buldging capacitors (the small cylinder objects), brownish residue, bulging sides etc are symptoms of a dying mobo. Check there are no objects causing a short on the board (you may need to remove the board to check) also, check the brass standoffs are not contacting the uninsulated parts of the board

1. Faulty hardware: remove all the power rails to the drives and optical drives and test
2. Bad Ram: remove all ram modules reboot and see if it beeps several times, replace each ram module in turn and retest
3. Bad CPU (common fault), replace CPU with a known good one, retest.
   
4. Bad Motherboard power regulator: No solution for this other than to replace the board

Since you do get some indicator on the TV, it means that the standby power supply is working but the rest of the power supply may not be.
The main board processor may have gotten corrupted, I would try unplugging it for about an hour to let it reset itself to see if it will work. If it still not working, then the power supply module needs to be checked out.
