Usually the oven has to be locked closed with a handle on on the front door. This will activate a safety mechanism that will allow the cleaning cycle to start. If the safety switch is malfunctioning or the door is not closed properly, the cleaning cycle won't start.

Hello, I am cleaning my oven today. I went to the whirlpool.com website and clicked on customer support and typed in my model number which is located on the front inside panel of my oven. They will provide you the manual with the self cleaning instructions. I hope this helps.
