Iomega USB 2 Desktop Hard drive not recognised by xp sp2

I cant get the above product to show on my computer so that I can use it. When I plug in the usb cable I get a message to say that there are no drivers available for the drive - code 28. I have tried to update the usb drivers but that has not worked. The desktop drive does not show in disk management so reassigning a drive letter will not work. Device manager lists the drive under other devices but it has a yellow warning sign next to again relating to the drivers. I have tried to follow the Iomega advice but that has not worked either. The drive works on a lap top that is running the same xp professional sp2 version as the main computer. Please help as this is driving me mad.

Cheers

Neil.

    Fwadley,

Thanks for the advice and taking the time to post. I have looked for the driver under the add / remove programmes but it does not show up. Nothing from Iomega is listed in this either. Should I try to uninstall the USB drivers and then re-install them? I'm sorry but I am not that good with computers as you can probably tell!! If I do uninstall the USB drivers how do I get the mouse to work as I reboot as it is USB connected as well. Sorry for all the silly questions.

    Cheers

Make sure you are pluging in the extrernal drive in the USB 2.0 because other USB will have problem recognising it.

Iomega portable hard drives connect to your computer through a USB port. When you connect the Iomega hard drive to your computer, it should pop up as an icon in your My Computer folder. If you can't find the icon in your My Computer folder then you probably need to update the driver for the device. Updating this driver is not very hard and can be done automatically from the Windows Device Manager.

Plug your Iomega hard drive into one of your computer's USB port. Click the "Start" button and go to the "Run" field. Type "Devmgmt.msc" into the Run box and press the "Enter" key. Go down to the bottom of the device manager to the "Universal Serial Bus Controller." Click on the little + (plus) sign to expand it. Look for an entry with a yellow exclamation point and click on it. Click the "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" button and then click the "Next" button. Click the "Finish" button when the installation has finished. Go to the "My Computer" folder from your "Start" menu and locate the Iomega hard drive icon. Double click the icon to gain access to the external hard drive. Hope it helps.

PC not recognising Iomega Prestige 320gb usb portable hard drive. I've connected it all up, disconnected, reconnected, rebooted the computer, but the drive is just not recognised and does not show up in...

Does the drive show in Device Manager? Right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the open device manager.. Navigate down to Disk Drives or Hard Drives, click on the plus sign and see if your drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive name and open properties for the drive. Click on the 'Volumes' tab and hit the 'Populate Button'. It may be the disk just needs initialising, then reformatting before you can use it. If it does need initializing, a wizard should appear to guide you through the process!
If this doesn't solve your problem, try using a different USB cable and/or USB ports on your computer, and ensure to unplug all other USB devices other than keyboard & mouse.

Hello, I plugged in my iomega 1tb desktop hard drive storage device and the drive does not appear in my drive or computer. I do have the new hardware 'sound' that comes up but I dont have the drive show up...

Iomega 1TB Desktop Hard Drive is a dedicated usb 2.0 plug and play external storage device that has an ability to transfer at 480Mbits/second. having these large capacity storage drive needs a fast connection and additional power source to make sure to run the external unit system properly.

just make sure both power and data cables are properly plugged and connected respectively. if you are using it with a desktop, please always plug your usb connection from the Iomega 1TB external drive to the rear USB port in line where you built-in LAN is.do not plug it in the frontload ports. some motherboard manufacturers uses usb 1 and/or 1.1 only for frontload desktop casing provision.

thank you.

Hard drive not recognised

It may not appear like your other drives eg. C: d: etc
it may appear as a removable drive lower down in the list.

Or you may have to add a drive letter

To add a drive letter in XP
Go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management.

Now select disk management, your drive should show in here
right click on it and click change drive letter and paths
now click add at the bottom of this box and just click ok

You should now be able to see it fine
