I am using a Singer 7442 - it's 8 years old but previous owner had never turned it on. It was sewing great for my first project until I changed the stitch setting.. then the thread started bunching and not picking up the bobbin thread.
Hmmm, could be several things.
Try a brand new needle. Try a different brand of thread.
Remove the top thread from the machine. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct.
If it still will not pick up the bobbin thread, the machine could be out of time.

I've had similar problems (as well as other problem with the thread breaking all the time and the "shuttle race" thing that holds the bobbin falling out. One very important thing that isn't mentioned in the manual but that the salesman stressed is that you have to use only "Schmetz" brand needles. They are a tiny bit longer, but that makes all the difference in the world if your stitches are skipping. I forgot and used Singer needles and had horrible results.

When your thread is bunching at the bottom, your top tension is not tight enough, or you did not thread the machine correctly. Make sure the thread goes through the tension blades. Check your manual how to do it properly. you can check if there is any tension by pulling on the thread before threading through the eye of the the needle, and with the presser foot down. By pulling with the left hand and adjusting the tension with the right hand you should be able to feel a difference. Normal setting is between 3 and 5

A few suggestions:
If the basic cleaning and re-threading (above) don't help, your machine(s) may be out of time or have another mechanical issue that will require a repair technician. We recommend a tech trained on your specific brands - they'll be better trained and able to get any repair parts that may be needed.

re insert the needle, maybe you did not put the needle up as far as it is to go. Make sure the flat side of the needle is to the back of the machine. Without any thread in the machine hand turn the wheel and look to see if the hook of your bobbin would/could catch the thread (to see if timing is right)
then thread the machine and hand turn the wheel and see what it is doing.
Your timing might be off, but I do not think that is likely. Though it is possible that when the needle fell out, it hit something hard, broke, and pushed the machine out of timing. then you need to bring it in.

- You could be holding the needle thread too tight.
Hold the thread lightly to keep the end from going down into the shuttle.- The needle could be thread incorrectly.
Thread the needle eye from the front to the back.- The needle could be bent or improperly inserted.
Install a new needle with the flat side of the needle facing the back.- if this does not help you go to this link.
