There are multiple things that can cause thread to break. First, determine how, where, and when the thread is breaking, ie is the thread shredding first, does it stitch for a couple inches and then break... Narrowing down answers will help you know where to focus on the cause.

#1--Try changing the brand of thread, and AVOID old or bargain bin thread!

Possible causes:

  • Needle eye too small for thread used - then thread frays and breaks
  • Cheap thread used that easily frays - esp. when thread has unequal thickness
  • Needle eye too sharp
  • Component of the thread guide is not smoothly guiding the thread or is sharp
  • Upper thread tension (far) too large

Why does my threat keep breaking when i am embroidering

  • Tension is too high
  • Thread is snagging on spool (horizontal spool)
  • Needle point is barbed
  • Debris in hook/race
  • Hook not smooth (or damaged)
If nesting or looping on bottom, then tension is too low.

Singer futura XL400 thread breaking

Unthread the machine and start from scratch. After rethreading make sure your spool of thread has free play at the reel (not caught on anything) then check the thread tension make sure it's not too tight. Also check the bobbin is in place correctly and the bobbin has been wound correctly not too tight. If it is still happening it may be an adjustment to be done by a tech? Also try different threat, faulty thread can do that as well.

My bobbin threat is bunching and after a couple of inches, the top thread breaks.

Check that the thread is tight around the bobbin. Make sure that the bobbin is in the right way around - the bobbin thread should double back on itself coming out of the bobbin holder. The bobbin tension adjustment is the small screw in the plate on the bobbin case that the thread passes under as it comes off the bobbin and goes out.

Babylock seger machine keep breaking the left side needle.

Try rethreading the machine, and make sure the thread is not wrapped around anything. Then check the tension for the needles. Run a few inches of chainstich off slowly, while watching the thread and loopers make the loops over the finger. Your threads may be in the wrong position, or underneath the wrong parts to start.
