Ryobi Linetrimmer model RST131ES

Look at the top of the spool. Line up the two triangles/arrows by turning the inner wheel The inner wheel is a little smaller that the diameter of the spool and has grip lines scored around it. Just below those arrows, on the side of the spool there is a hole where the line would come out of. Thread the line into that hole until it comes out through a hole on the top of the spool. Then bend the end of that line over and stick it in the little hole next to the hole it came through. That will lock it in place. Pull on the other end of the line to tighten it. Now turn that inner wheel and the line will wrap around on the inside of the spool. When it stops and you can't turn it anymore, it's full. Cut the line off about 10 inches or so outside of the spool.

Hi there, takes a bit of working out without a manual, but try this....take bottom half of trimmer line spool off, get piece of spool line approx 60 cm, long and thread through centre holes, ( bit fiddly but ) pull line through until you have equal length on both sides, dont try and wind it up onto the spool, just put ends of line through outside cover holes, then lock spool in place in other half. now simply wind the knob at the end and the line should retract into the spool., sounds complicated but really isnt, best regards and good luck, Philbee

To install string in the Ryobi you do not have to disassemble anything: Line up the two arrows on the inner and outer reel, remove any excess string, cut two
pieces of string about 10 feet, feed line in the side holes, secure
line in hole where it comes out the bottom (it only takes about 1/4in.
to do so), pull strings tight, then turn the inner reel counter clockwise to wind it. If
it sticks a little just pull line a little.
To remove the inner spool in order to remove line that has broken
inside, to clean the mechanism, or to perform other maintenance, grasp
the outer reel and unscrew the bump knob counter-clockwise. Mine is
often very tight and requires pliers to get enough leverage. While you
are in there, clean the inner reel and the inside of the outer reel to
improve feed performance. The shaft rarely needs cleaning. Do not
lubricate. After re-installing the reel, add string (0.080") as
described above.

Okay, so the good news is that YOU are probably not stupid. If you have a Ryobi trimmer like I do, it might have taken you a while to figure out the "secret" on how to rewind the line. If you only had to learn the lesson once, you are smarter than I am. (I'm leaving myself a note for next time).
If you wind the line the wrong way, you go through line really fast until it clogs up inside the bump head and you are forced to try again. The trimmer has an arrow on the spool for the direction to re-wind the line. Think of it this way, TURN THE SPOOL IN THE DIRECTION OF THE ARROW! Don't do what I did and rewind the line in the direction of the arrow, that would be wrong.
Whether this is a "mistake", a way to sell more trimmers/parts/line, or simply bad tranlation from Japanese to Engrish, it really doesn't matter. You don't need to buy anything with the exception of new line.
Good Ruck,
Mark
