Source always PCM, can't get Dolby-D

Regardless of source (including Dolby DD DVD's, PS3), receiver always shows source as "PCM", not allowing selection of Dolby-Digital surround modes.

    I HAVE THE SAME MY TX-SR605 ALWAYS SHOWS PCM,EVERYTHING HOOKED UP WITH HDMI CABLES.MAYBE ITS BECAUSE I ONLY HAVE ONE SURROUND BACK SPEAKER HOOKED UP AT THE PRESENT TIME,SURROUND STILL SOUNDS GREAT,CAN'T ACCESS ALL SOUND SETTINGS,

PCM is standard when using HDMI cables, you are passing an already decoded audio signal to the receiver and it outputs the sound and does nothing more. The reciever calls this PCM, your PS3, when pressing select should show that it is decoding the dolby digital HD. There is no quality difference in the two. PCM is the same because it is un compressed audio. So when using HDMI, no matter the signal that the movie or music is playing, wether it be dolby or DTS, you will see PCM when using HDMI.

Ok, I have two Dolby D sources (sat box and DVD player) and I am having the same problem. I tried switching DVD player to Bitstream, and that did not fix the problem. I also whent through the audio setup on the sat box and set it to output Dolby D only and that still did not fix the problem.

The only method that allowed me to get Dolby D was to use an optical cable. This is not a good solution as HDMI should work and optical is not able to transfer the new HD audio formats that HDMI 1.3 can handle.

Any other solutions? Are you guys using HDMI 1.3 cables (shouln't matter just wondering)? I'm currently using 3 cables I got online. My next check it to try the over priced cables from a store and then return the receiver.

Hey, you have to set up the SOURCE to use bitstream instead of PCM. For instance, in my case, I had to configure my DVD player to output audio in bitstream. Then the receiver was perfectly happy, decoding Dolby D as it should.

Using HDMI? The manual (for the 705) says you have to use digital audio input, eithe coaxial or optical.

If you are connecting the soundbar to your TV with the digital audio cable, make sure to select "D IN" using the source button on the soundbar. Bluetooth (BT) is a separate source from another device. (phone, etc.) The TV will need to be set to use the digital audio output and probably PCM format. (?) The subwoofer is preconfigured at the factory to mate up with your soundbar. (See below instructions - your soundbar includes the amplifier:)

Digital audio output setting:
After connecting an amplifier with digital audio input and
external speakers as shown, you should set an audio
output format compatible with the programme you are
watching or the device connected.
Go to "HOME" > "TV Menu" > "Setup" > "Option" >
"Terminal setting" > "Digital audio output" > select
"PCM" or "Bitstream".
NOTE
• When set to "Bitstream", Dolby Digital is output when the Dolby
Digital or Dolby Digital Plus audio formats are received. When
set to "PCM", PCM is output no matter what audio formats are
received.
• When set to "Bitstream", HE-AAC audio formats can be output
as Dolby Digital.

You don't. You change the signal at the source device end, not the TV.

If you have connected a Blu-ray player or a games console, then set the device audio option to Bitstream. This will send a data stream to the TV that it will decode either as Dolby or DTS depending on the source signal format.

Dolby Digital is only an option for an external AV source connected via HDMI. That's the only way to get a Bitstream signal in to the TV. The TV's internal tuner is only capable of PCM audio. It's a DVB-T tuner (standard definition) rather than the DVB-T2 tuner needed for HD. Even then, only the HD channels are encoded in DD.

Iff your BD player or console is decoding to stereo PCM, then it's doing the same job as the TV. There's a small advantage with one of the audio processing modes in how it limits the dynamic range, but other than that PCM and DD will sound identical. This is especially the case with any TV that has no optical audio out, as in this case. The TV can't pass a DD signal out to an external audio system. So all sound is played via the internal speakers or headphone jack. It'll all sound the same, PCM or DD.

All 5 speakers work on test mode but on surround sound the left and right rear speakers are not working. How can this be?
Hello Ruby,

This is because your receiver is not in the correct surround sound mode for the number of channels being sent from the audio source, i.e. your TV or DVD player. It is likely your receiver is set for Dolby Digital (DD). You will need to switch your receiver to a Dolby Pro Logic (PL or PL II) setting to get audio from the rear speakers using your current audio source.

If you are unsure how to do this, please reply to me with the brand and model of the receiver. Some receivers have a "Surround Mode" button on the front of the unit or the remote. If you want to include further details of your setup, I can also give you some advice on attaining the best audio quality with the equipment you are using. You may be able to get Dolby Digital surround by changing some audio settings on the audio source or using a different connection.

5.1 sound system (blue light) does not come on. sound comes and goes, sometimes quiet, sometimes lound. dolby does not seem to work .
what is your source? (DVD, Cable, Blueray, etc.) My guess is that you have your source set to output PCM instead of bitstream. Check this in the menu of your output source. If it is PCM, it will only output 2 channels unless you are using an HDMI cable. If you are using an HDMI cable, the sound should be the same, but it is sent directly to the speakers using your receiver as a pass-thru. Your receiver will not detect it as dolby or dts as it is not actually doing any processing. When you check the menu, bitstream may also be listed as "digital". Hope this works for you.

Your high-fidelity equipment should get TV-related audio from the same place the TV gets it - Cable, DVD, BD or Sat. A digital feed each of them will carry TRUE Dolby Digital audio. There is little sense in diluting TV-related audio through a TV and it's marginal audio electronics that are usually limited to analog stereo.

RX-V465 Yamaha Reciver we can get picture but no sound w/PS3
Check HDMI Sound settings:
Enter Setup menu via remote, then Func. Setup / HDMI / Audio. You can choose from Amp (sound will be played via Yamaha), TV (sound will go straight via HDMI out to your TV and not play on Yamaha) and Amp+TV (Yamaha will play the sound and also pass it to the TV).
Also what is your source? DVD or some network player? For example Yamaha cannot decode audio in AAC or other computer formats, so be sure to change the audio settings of your player to output PCM and not raw/bitstream.

HK AVR35 Receiver - Dolby Digital not displaying or working
If the display is showing as optical/PCM, then the input signal is in 2 Ch Stereo.

Try to change the signal from the source i.e. the DVD player, On the remote, go to audio and press repatedly , the audio would change from audio1, audio 2 .... and so on, depending upon how may have been recorded on the DVD. If the DVD is recorded in Dolby Digital, it may show the audio as Dolby Digital 5.1 on you monitor. Once this setting has been done, your Receiver should automatically detect it and show as Optical/Dolby digital.

Display while playing movies
Hi, no, this is not the normal display. It should indicate the digital sound format like DD or DTS, etc. If it is displaying PCM, this is probably due to the audio settings on your DVD player. Please provide your DVD make and model, and I will look to find the solution.

Dolby surround output
Make sure that you use digital inputs between source and your receiver and the input is seen as digital in selector. If you use analog connection, no DD signal could be transmitted.
