The instructions below are to change the thumbnail picture.
Just change it for a blank picture or something that won't matter.
To add/change a profile picture or change your current profile picture:
For best quality, your profile picture should be at least 320 pixels wide and 320 pixels tall.
Note: Your current profile picture is always public.

Looks like the new photo strip feature in Facebook still has bugs,lot of people are facing this kind of issue with it.The strip totally dissapears when edit the pics that shows in the strip.I'll list some of the methods that worked for my friends,that made the photo strip reappear.One method works for some and other works for some,I know its strange! So please both of the following methods and see if it works.
1) Change your Facebook profile picture with the one you want to add to the photo strip and keep
doing the same with all the pics you want to put up on the strip until the strip is full and now your
photo strip at the top of the page should have appeared on the top of profile page.
2) Tag yourself in all the photos you want to add to the strip (since you have already tried this,you can skip it but I listed it anyway since it worked for some people)
3) Ask your friends to tag you in the photos you want to show up on the strip and your photo strip could come back up.
Also make sure "Photo Album Strip" tab shows up on your profile page (Next to Wall,Info Tabs) If not then

choose one of the two account which you would like to retain.
Enter into the facebook account that you would like to delete
Click on "Account" which is at the top right corner of your facebook page, select "Account settings".
Look at the left part of the page, under "general", click "Security".
Look at the end of the list, under "security", you will find 'Deactivate your account". It is typed in blue.
Follow the instructions on the next page and proceed for the account deactivation.
Before you delete the account, save the pictures and contact that you will like to transfer to the other facebook address.
To get a profile picture, click profile > edit profile > profile picture (it is at the left part of the screen). Upload the profile picture from there.
