Have you tried connecting it to an external monitor? Are you sure the heatsink fan is not defective? If the screen works on an external monitor you know the video card is good. As long as the cable is plugged into the motherboard to provide power for the heatsink then it's either a bad heatsink fan or the motherboard connector for the heatsink is bad. My money is on the heatsink fan if you can get video from an external monitor.

My acer asipre 4739z laptop starting after a few minutes not work. fan is running battery is ok

Please describe a list of events that takes place from the time the ON button is pressed until the screen goes OFF. Attach an external monitor and press the Function key with the screen key to transfer video. If monitor responds the video is OK but screen is BAD. Then replace Screen. If Monitor does not show video then problem is probably a thermo problem. To correct video chip overheating do the following; First ... Remove Battery. Remove CPU and Video Heatsink and Fan. Clean dust and lint that is blocking airflow in heat transfer grill. Clean dust from inside fan. Clean old heatsink grease from Heatsink and from Video chip and CPU. Apply fresh High Quality Heatsink grease evenly but sparingly to chips. Replace Heatsink following tightening order to spring screws at CPU. Replace covers ... and start.

Hp dv6000 attempts to start led lights come on then shuts down repeats this process

The hp dv6000 has a video card issue that is very comman the cpu heatsink and the video card and conncted to the same copper heatsink and what happens is the video card overheats and the pins that are soldered to the board come loose now there is a couple of ways to fix it option a is to take the laptop apart and remove the motherboard and heatsink and the cpu chip then locate the video chip and isolate the video card and heat it up to remelt the solder points this can be done by taking a aluminum can and cuting out the square that is same size of video chipthen with a heat gun heat up the chip so the solder joints remelt to the board but BE VERY CARFUL IF YOU OVER HEAT THE CHIP IT WILL MELT once the chip has cooled then reistall your cpu chip add new thermal paste and get a flat square piece of copper the size of the cpu chip and put it on the cpu chip then add more thermal paste and put the heat sink back on and reassemble the laptop and if you didnt damage the chip it should fire right up option b is to buy a replacement motherboard that has the upgraged heatsink installed and put that in but make sure yoyu order the right board check the replacement part number sticker on the motherboard and make sure yoyu order the right one i have done this process to about 200 of these hp dv6000 and they are still working today

Hello, I cleaned out my sony vaio VGN-A790 fan and after having done so it doesnt boot up, screen doesnt turn on and fan doesnt spin. however the motherboard and hard drive is getting power. all...

The first thing that I would try to do is to reseat your ram modules. Remove both ram modules, blow out the ports in case of dust, and then put them back in again securely. If this doesn't correct the problem, try it again. If the problem still persists, then you need to disassemble the laptop and reassemble it, checking for loose connections. There's also the possibility that an improperly placed screw is shorting out the motherboard because it's too long for the hole and is touching something, or that the heatsink isn't secure on the CPU.

Each time i start my laptop..... its screen is split into four sections ......even boot screen ... and main screen

You have a video problem.
To test this, connect the laptop to an external monitor, if the problem persists, then the GPU (Graphics chip is going bad). If it works ok, the problem is with the screen itself.

To resolve the problem with the graphics chip (and usually when it gets this bad, it points to the graphics chip beginning to unsolder itself from the motherboard), strip the laptop, clean out the cooling fan, remove and replace the CPU and CPU heatsink, applying new thermal paste to the cpu and making sure the thermal pad is covering the top of the graphics chip. Tighten the retaining screws and re-assemble the laptop. This MAY work, if it does not, then you will need to get the motherboard replaced. (Common fault on HP and Compaq laptops).

If the screen is the problem, replace the screen, check security of the VGA cable to the screen

Depending on how old the laptop is, it sadly may be more cost effective to replace it, as screen and motherboard replacements will be in the region of £70.00

My picture has been pixelated

Probably a bad display driver ( download the latest driver for video chip from the website)
Or might be the resolution is set too low ( right click on desktop / personalise / display settings and change) For XP, its changeable in the control panel / display box.

Test the laptop by connecting it to an external monitor, see if you get the same problem (if you do, see below re: graphics chip, if not, see below re: screen

After that, this could be faulty hardware, overheating graphics chips will cause the display to do this, best solution here, dismantle and clean the heatsink and fan, remove any dust build up.

If that still fails to work, the chip may be damaged beyond repair (new motherboard / graphics board depending on the laptop you have), Or, the screen itself may be failing (replace screen)

The system shuts down suddenly after every 45 minutes or so without any warning and there are horizontal lines at the bottom of the screen where the selection bar is located.

Overheating problem. What is happening is that the laptop is getting too hot and the graphics chip is suffering as a result, which is why you are getting the display problems. if you persist in using it, the chip will eventually die on you.

Solution:

You need to dismantle the laptop until you can access the motherboard heatsink and fan assembly
You also need to have some thermal grease to hand.

Remove the heatsink and fan, clean out the dust and lint from the fan housing, the heatsink and the cooling grille. Clean the top of the cpu and apply clean new grease (about a 2mm ball of it will do). Also clean the heatsink pad that touched the cpu.

Check the thermal pad (if present) that sits on the graphics chip is not damaged and make sure it is in place before refitting the heatsink and fan assembly.

Rebuild the laptop (you can get some good instructions off google if you look for your model)

I have the same problem for Sony VGN-S460 heatsink fan problem

I trust that you have purchased the entire fan assembly as they are inseparable from the heatsink. You must disassemble the entire laptop in order to remove the fan assembly. they are two screws that are below the motherboard that must be remove in order for the fan assembly to come apart.
If you cannot achieve this yourself, or lack confidence in your ability to rebuild the unit after, you can send the unit to us at www.cowetacomputerstore.com and we will accomplish the desired outcome. We have worked on this system resolving this very issue.

Gabriel175: Laptop now boots and video heatsink/fan now running but screen is "garbled" with horizonal lines. Will attempt re-connecting the screen cable.

To determine if the LCD is faulty or the video card, connect an external monitor to the video port on the laptop, power up the external monitor first then the laptop. The video data will divert to the external monitor automatically and if you get a normal Windows image the the video card is OK and the fault is the LCD screen or video cable.

Toshiba Tecra M3 Laptop keeps freezing and shutting down, Can't even do Fresh Install on New Hard Disk Without Freezing, Have Replaced CPU Heatsink Compound.

What made you suspect the compund? You're probably right though. The fan has died or is too slow. The CPU and the video chip are what the fan is protecting. It might require a new CPU chip and fan. If it's the video chip, then a new mother board is in your future.

Good Luck
