If you are troubleshooting a system or OS problem, you should not consider firmware updates until after exploring more typical troubleshooting steps like file system error checking and anti-virus scanning.

try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive this should schedule the task on restart then defragment your hard drive

That is an old drive. No need to buy an exact replacement since that one is so old. Any hard drive will do. If your BIOS supports a larger drive, you can get an even higher capacity drive to replace it.
