You didn't specify the brand and model, but on most Android tablets, the "home" button will take you back to the home page while leaving that book open in the application in memory. You can open up a different application from the home page. Then press the "list " button on the left of the "home" button. A set of miniature windows of all the open applications will appear. Just press the window of the application you want to return to (such as the book), and the tablet will switch to that application. You can do this as many time you need to switch from one open application to another.
But you can also close any application you don't need by pressing and holding your finger on its window. A new option bar will allow you to close it without affecting the other opened applications.
