Canon IXUS 50 lens? broken

My sister dropped her IXUS 50 on the floor while the lens was open. Now when trying to take pictures or video with the camera the lens comes out just about 2 millimeters and then the camera automatically shutdowns before the picture comes on the display. After restarting the camera in picture viewing mode the lens extends and moves back normally.

I would like to atlest take the lens off to check if everything looks ok, but I don't know how.

My lens for my ixus 750 is stuck open. when

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

My daughter dropped my Canon on the tile floor and now the zoom lens will not open. It says "lens error, restart camera." What do I do?

When the camera was dropped, the lens was most likely twisted. So you either have to try to force it back (be gently) or send it in to Canon repairs.

Broken lens : error

The lens unit will have to be replaced. This is a factory level service. It will most likely be more feasible to replace the camera!

Canon ixus 50 the camera is not switching on and the lens is open

Check the battery cover closes properly, the camera will not operate at all if the switch thinks the cover is even slightly open. Try removing the card, sometimes they cause cameras to not start when they are faulty. If all else fails, the fuse is most likely blown. They are internally located just near the power switch but you are best to have a service centre replace it for you. Best of luck.

You didn't mention what exactly is the problem. But please review the posts on the following blog, as they cover the most likely problems to result from a dropped camera to include lens errors, shattered LCD's, and non-starting cameras:
