Hi Sonnyfresh, Follow the following steps:

Step 1 - Open the Case Use a small screwdriver to open the case. Be careful with the contents inside after the case is open, as you do not want the tape and the system to fall out of the case and unwind. To prevent this, keep your finger on top or use a small piece of masking tape to keep everything in place.
Step 2 - Look Inside Take a look inside the case to see if there is a simple problem with the retraction system. For example, the spring might be undamaged but unhinged from the tape, or there might be dirt clogging the spring. It's an easy fix, remove the dirt or reinsert the spring, and then proceed to the sixth step to close the case.
Step 3 - Remove the Tape If the problem runs deeper than a bit of debris, you will have to remove the tape to observe the retraction system. Take the tape slowly out of the case, holding the retraction system in place. Once the tape is completely out, disconnect it from the spring.

Step 4 - Replace or Fix the Retraction System If the spring is broken, or damaged, you will need to replace it with a new one. You should be able to replace it. Make sure you have the model number and size when you go to the purchase one.

Step 5 - Put the Tape Back After replacing the spring, connect the tape to the spring by putting the end of the spring into the hole at the start of the tape. There is usually a part connected with tape. Use some masking tape to put it back together. After you've secured the connection, let the tape roll slowly back into the case.
Step 6 - Close the Case Test the retraction system by letting the tape roll in, hopefully you have repaired retraction system. Remove the masking tape keeping the system inside the case, and reattach the top cover with the screwdriver. Your tape should retract again properly.

Kind regards
Davoid

SOURCE: DSR 11 playback problem

Pete, we are having the same problem with 2 dsr-11s.

The fix for us was the "auto repeat" switch on the back of the unit. It was "on" please turn it off.

The other idea was that the tape tension is very sensitive in the units, try exercising the tape (though exorcise might be good too) by fast-forwarding then rewind the tape start to finish. Tape that were tightly wound at the factory can cause this proble as well. Good Luck. Greg VA

SOURCE: Right-side cover will not close, springs are disconnected.

Normally the right cover hooks break off and causes the door not to close. There is square holes in front and back of the right cover that you can use to hook the spings again.

How to fix not rewind craftsman posilock tape 12 ft x 1/2 in 39406?

To prevent this, keep your finger on top or use a small piece of masking tape to keep everything in place.

Step 4 - Replace or Fix the Retraction System If the spring is broken, disconnected, or damaged, you will need to replace it with a new one. You can purchase a new part at the same store you bought your tape measure from. Make sure you have the model number and size when you go to the store to get the exact fit.
Step 6 - Close the Case Having tested the retraction system by letting the tape roll in, you have successfully repaired your retraction system. Now, remove the masking tape keeping the system inside the case, and reattach the top cover with the screwdriver. Your measuring tape should retract again properly.
If, after completing this guide, your tape measure still doesn't work properly, consider purchasing a new one or upgrading to a laser tape measure for reading at a distance.

My hozelock auto reel is only retracting 90 percent of the way in, how do i fix this?

This sort of problem affects all sorts of retractable things as they age - tape measures, vacuum cleaner cords, car seat belts...

Mostly such things contain a very long flat steel spring that is coiled inside and pulling out the hose, tape measure, etc. coils the spring more tightly storing energy to rewind when needed. Unfortunately few such designs use a spring that is strong enough to overcome the additional friction that accumulates with age and use. Lubricant applied when new loses effectiveness, smooth surfaces become less smooth and use produces dust that has a further negative effect and things like cables and hoses lose flexibility and smoothness meaning they need more power to rewind effectively.

Over the years I have variously taken such items apart to clean, lubricate and retension the spring. Sometimes I have drilled a small hole in the casing to the spring chamber and sprayed a lot of WD-40 in there while working the mechanism. With seatbelts and cables I find a dry silicone spray to make the belt or cable and it's guides slippery works well without disturbing the spring.

My final advice is if you remove the cover of the spring chamber always keep at least one hand on the spring. Do not put it down and do not let it go or you could believe for a second you are being attacked by an angry cat and rewinding those springs by hand is hard and tedious work...

How to rewind a tape measure

You'll need to take the tape casing apart but need special security torx bits to do that (a T-8 and T-9). Once apart (careful, two small springs inside) you can take the tape spool apart and rewind the tape to re-establish tension. Then re-assemble!

How do I replace the blade of a lufkin fluorolok tape?

Pull the old blade ALL off the way out until you see where the spring attaches to the blade. Twist the old blade off while carefully holding on to the spring. re-attach the new blade and slowly let it back in. Unless you cut the old blade and heard the spring make a unwinding sound, then you are pretty much screwed unless you want to take it apart and waste about 4 hours of your life trying to rewind the spring and then finally giving up and buying a new one for about 10/12 bucks.10 bucks divided by 4 hours equals $2.50 an hour.......no thanks ......I'll just go buy a new one. The string gets caught and is jammed. Give the cover a quarter tun to remove it. Then, pull the spool off with the plastic cutting string. Unwind it a bit and rewind it so it's straightened out. Then feed the two ends out the holes on the side when you put it back.

Rewinding starter spring on chainsaw

I was able to rewind the spring steel coil, but it took 2 people, one at each end, to wind it tightly and hold it tightly enough to fit back into the casing. The bend at the end of the coil must be re-inserted into its own retainer. It was not easy, and it takes some time to get this done. RH
