Had a similar problem " with my L7590 allin one unit, "scanner did not function" from the Solution center. If your unit is plugged into a surge protector, unplug the unit from the surge protector and plug directly into the wall power socket. It solved my problem. Can you believe this. The explanation is that the printer goes into sleep mode it reduces the amount of power needed for its uses and the internal surge protector of the unit notes this; however, when you "wake the printer up" the difference in power usage between the two levels may be considered by the surge protector as a power surge and limit or halt the increase, disabling certain functions. SOURCE: Problem in cartridge of HP Officejet Pro L7380 All-in-One Printer
Every cartridge needs to have ink in it to print. Even if you only want to print black and white and one of your colors is empty. A dirty little industry secret is that when you print black....it also makes the colors print too...so you get to buy even more ink than you need to!
SOURCE: HP Officejet Pro L7650 Print head problem
The reason why the printer refuses to print if you get low on one or more colors is that the system runs off negative pressure through the ink lines to the print head. If you were able to continue printing with an empty cartridge you could get air in the respective ink line, disrupt the negative pressure, make it so that that color will no longer print, and require you to get the printer serviced to fix the problem. I own a Cartridge World ink refilling store and I feel this is a good machine (compared to some of the others out there). The only down side with this type of machine is the print heads expiring or getting clogged as you are experiencing. The reason the black is clogged and not the other colors is that the black ink is pigment based and the colors are dye based. The pigment based inks do tend to clog print heads over time. You can try to rehydrate the print head with warm distilled water. if you can't get it working to your satisfaction you can buy a new black/yellow print head for $72. With this type of printer you should print at least one black and white and one color document per week to keep the print heads fresh. If they sit too long without ink flowing through them then they can get clogged and print poorly. I hope this helps belay some of the resentment you hold towards your printer.

This is actually a quick books issue that they blame on the printers
here are the follwing steps to resolve the issue
Quick Books (2009) qbprint.qbp file change
doc&settings\allusers\appdata\inuit\quickbooks
rename above mentioned file to qbprint.old
if its an erlier version of quickbooks ie. 2006, the file path is then: doc&settings\programfiles\inuit\quickbooks then look for the file and rename it
Here is the website from intuit that acknowledges the issue
