I have a brand new kenmore elite microwave convection oven 204.77603610 that was given to our ministry that donor won. So no receipt for warranty or exchange. When I try to microwave something -- the food does not heat but inside of oven gets very hot. Appears as if convection is coming on instead of micro. Any ideas? Control board? Any guesses on what kind of cost me might be looking at to repair?

That would be a problem with the secondary interlock (lower door switch) or its mount.
Even though a door
switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.
Door switch
or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening
the
door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.
There are
plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and
onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.
The screws on these
mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be
activated properly.
Sometimes it's
a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just
out of position. This tab
can be hard to see, since it is under the
bottom edge of the switch.
If the switch mount is broken, it's usually more economical and
safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the
switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

SOURCE: microwave sparked out now it does not work
You had something metal inside the microwave. Do you have a rack inside on a revolving tray? On my microwave, if the foot of the wire rack is not on the revolving tray, it will spark against the floor of the oven. Microwave will go around round pieces of metal - it will spark if it finds a flat surface. I dont think you did any damage to your machine but try to not do this again.
I hope this helps you.

Is this oven still under warranty? If so, take advantage. If not, remove the power plug and the case. Short out, with a screwdriver, the large can-shaped capacitor with two terminals sticking out. Check the wiring and circuit board for signs of burning. If everything looks ok, remove the thin sheet metal wave guide that sits above or beside the microwave energy port into the cooking cavity. Under the sheet metal, there is a metal fan-like device called a 'stirrer' that has a plastic bearing. Remove this stirrer and smell the bearing. If it smells like the burning wire smell, replace the stirrer. You can buy it through 'Sears Parts' online.
