Your print head has died. It cannot be repaired, but it could be replaced at some expense.
It is probably a QY6-0080 unit. Find a local supplier of genuine parts and price it against replacing the machine.

Dear dgthorpe,
This indicates that printhead of your printer faulty. Commonly this problem come with short circuitry problem in printhead so it may harm logic board and carriage unit too. I suggest you to try checking with another printhead first.

You can check that it's installed properly, after that all you can do is replace the printhead. They are like a light bulb and burn out when you least expect it. If you printer is less than a year old Canon will replace the printhead, after a year you have to buy a new one. Anywhere from $60.00 to $100.00 The part number is on the side of the printhead, the number starts with QY6, the numbers after that are the actual part number.
