SOURCE: 1989 Ingersoll Rand 185 diesel compressor shuts down under load

most have safety shut downs built in, on the compressor side you will have a high discharge temp shut down, usually set to shut down @ 230 degrees F. normal temp should be @ 180F if it is running hot first check oil level on the compressor, and that the radiator is clean. some machines will have a thermostat that will only allow oil flow to go to the radiator after it comes up to about 150 degrees F. you really need to have a manual on the machine to see what other safety's it may have on the compressor and engine side as well.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much for responding. It was a little low on coolant. The comp. oil level was fine. I changed the fuel filter and the prob is gone"

SOURCE: The compressor starts and stops after a short

More than likely it is a problem with the inlet control, commonly I have found wear in the throttle linkage can cause this or a faulty sump pressure sensor that is out of calibration.

Northstar Gas air compressor M459392C continues to build pressure even after idle down. It goes until the relief valve pops. I adjusted the unloader down to 110 and it still continues to climb. What can...

  1. Pressure switch: The pressure switch may not be shutting off the compressor when it reaches the set pressure level. If this is the case, the switch will need to be replaced.
  2. Check valve: The check valve prevents the compressed air from flowing back into the compressor pump when it is not running. A malfunctioning check valve can cause pressure to continue to build up, even when the compressor is idle. A damaged or worn-out check valve may need to be replaced.
  3. Piston rings: If the compressor's piston rings are worn or damaged, air can leak past the piston and cause pressure to continue to build even when the compressor is idle. In this case, the piston rings will need to be replaced.

I got an Ingersol rand Rottary Compressor Model# PX6683U06083 Compressor it releases coolant out of the air intake I belive it was running backwards for a short while now it is rotating the right way, can...

If this type of compressor is run for any length of time in the wrong direction you will do damage for sure now if this unit is shut down while it is loaded (producing air) it will push lubricant out of the inlet filter most of the time people hit the emergency stop button to shut it done which is wrong the compressor should be unloaded first which when unloaded the inlet valve will be closed which then the compressor will be running unloaded and can now be shut down using the off button or switch not sure which one you have other reasons why this could happen failing load/unload solenoid usually the vent is plugged or bad minimum pressure check valve

Unloader ir t30 not operating tripping motor trying to start

the unloader is made into the pressure switch. When unit shuts down you should hear air blow out at the bottom of the pressure switch for a short period and stop.If it continually blows until the unit tries to start the tank check valve needs to be replaced. the check valve is located in the top of the tank where the discharge line goes into the tank. Also if you check the bottom of the pressure switch with the cover off you will be able to see the unloader. It's a schrader valve that is hit by a small arm on the pressure switch. you can replace the schrader valve. if it's something on the pressure switch the switch should be replaced. I've seen check valves bad but very seldom do you see the unloader bad. hope this helps you.

Ingersoll rand compressor type 30 is not unloading. Auxillary valve seems to be dirty with oil and at 150 psi the compressor is not unloading.

It sounds like the pressure switch is bad or out of adjustment. Typically the pressure switch is set at 175psi on a 2340. If the auxillary valve you are speaking of is on the pressure switch and is constantly blowing air from it you have a bad receiver tank check valve. Also if you are getting a lot of oil out the valve at the pressure switch you may have some oil control rings bad.

My 185 ingersoll rand tow behind compressor shuts down when I open the valve to blow out sprinkler system...why

I worked at a tool rental store while attending college and noticed that IR compressors would shut down for a variety of safety reasons. Most common was low oil (engine), high temp (engine) and high air temp (compressor) and safety valve measuring access flow or free flow as if the hose becomes disconnected from tool (OSHA safety). Check all the safety control features of your unit for possible answer. Good luck

My Ingersoll Rand 185 starts but does not have air at all. Just idles.

make sure that screw is running. check connections to loadbutton if there is a thermostat for warm up you can try to bridge this also check solenoidvalve for load-unload.
