it's probably because the scanner isn't configured well in the computer. What you should do, while to printer is turned on and connected to the computer is to go to the device manger (right click on "my computer" or "computer", and then go to the tab named "device manager"). go to "universal series bus controllers" and press on the plus sign. you should then have a list, search for "USB composite device" in that list. when you find it, right click on it and then left click on "uninstall" or "remove", approve it (press yes or OK) and after it done, disconnect the usb cable that connects the computer to the printer and restart the computer. only after the computer is booted up completely, you should reconnect the cable. after you do that you should get a pop up that says that new hardware is being installed (or something like that). wait for it to finish and after it says "you new hardware is installed and ready" (should appear near you computer clock), try to scan, it should work fine now.
