The term dirt dobbers is not known out side your area so you will have to give a detailed lo what they are so that an answer can be given
also when you say inner workings are you referring to the cooling system , the sump or the fuel system

SOURCE: tune up specs for honda outboard

You have probably already found an answer, but all the specs are in the owners manual. If you do not have one, you can download one for free from honda-marine.com under the owners section. You will only need the serial number for your engine.

SOURCE: 2003 115 mercury efi losing power

I am a Mercury certified technician. What you need to do is take it to a Mercury dealer and have them hook it up to the computer. It sounds like the engine could be in Guardian mode or possibly a high RPM misfire. It is not something that is common and the computer program that Mercury has for those is able to test misfires and all sorts of cool stuff. It can also tell you if the engine was broke in properly, how many actual running hours are on it and even at what RPM each hour was ran. It will be able to bring up all faults that it has had in the past and any faults that are current. I know that you are probably looking for a quick, easy fix but for this problem I dont think that there is any way around taking the engine in. For what it is worth, if they charge you for more than 2 hours to run it on the computer then take it somewhere else. I can fully test the engine with the computer in about an hour. The only reason that it would take any longer is if they had to put it in the water to duplicate the problem but most shops will have a test tank that is capable of running your engine under a load at full throttle. Sorry for the bad news but I cant think of any other way and throwing new parts at it is just going to get expensive quick.

SOURCE: Free wiring diagram for 1978 Mercury Outboard 115 HP boat motor

I have a maintainance manual for this engine (I have the same one) with pages of wiring diagrams. What specific system/area are you interested in, I could scan in the page(s) and email them to you.

My 2007 Avalon pontoon boat stalls out I have two lights next to key green and red red light comes on and alarm goes off then stalls out

Not knowing the engine manufacturer and horsepower it is still one of two items. Most of today's engines have an automatic oil feed if it is a two-stroke engine. The four-strokes have something similar, except it deals with maintaining a constant oil pressure for the engine and recognizes a low oil condition as well. Another potential issue is a restricted fuel supply going to the engine. Larger engines obviously, require more fuel. An air leak into the fuel line or a fuel restriction between the fuel tank and the engine can also cause alarms to activate.

Outboard motors

Keep the gas in your outboard new/clean with new oil every 6 months..Keep your motor covered when not in use, Dirt dabbers (dobbers) will build nest under the hood and break loose and ruin your motor, ,,Change your water pump and thermostate every year when motor is used a lot.....Dont run stainless steel props on small hp motors ,when you hit a log it will bend your prop shaft costing big $$$ to replace..Ck your lower gear oil if water is noted ,replace lower seals...Dont buy used motors unless you run a compression ck....ck for water in gear case , Dont buy 4 strokes to heavy to slow to many parts AND are being replaced by fuel injection 2 strokes .... Dont buy FORCE motors not made by mercury no parts being made and or extink and pure junk . Etex best motors , .

115 Yamaha 115 4 stroke bogs

Make sure that the fuel lines and filter are clean and unobstructed

First time out this year yamaha2005 115 4stroke new gas new filters cranks and runs great up to 15mph on pontoon boat but bogs if you give it any more gas

I have a 2007 Yamaha 115hp 2-stroke on my pontoon. They are a dependable engine. The first thing I would check is for a tiny pinhole or crack in a fuel line, that would cause it to "suck air" into the line at high power demand situations. If the lines are good, check the plug wires. Make sure they are firmly attached to the plug, and insure that they don't have a worn spot, anywhere along the wire that could be shorting out to the engine block or casing. Also, the air filter may be wet or oily, reducing air flow. If none of those solve the issue, it may be a coil pack, and might need to visit the dealer for diagnostics.

Do I use reg gas or a gas mix?

Matt, If engine is two stroke and not oil injected then yes you must mix 2 stroke oil and fuel. 4 stroke engine have a crank case which is filled to proper level with 4 stroke engine oil. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Yamaha 4 hp outboard steering friction swivel screw does not work

That's a current problem.
OR the screw is rusted in place. So then use WD40 or eqivalent to free the screw.
Or the parts inside are worn. Remove the friction screw. Then, remove the 4 bolts holding the swivel cap. Remove the entire engine from the swivel to prevent it fall on the ground. Replace the worn parts.

8hp yamaha runs hot

In most outboards, it will flow through the prop itself (through the inner prop). There should be a stream of water coming from somewhere around the back end of the motor itself, called a telltale, which visually shows that the water pump inside the outboard is pumping water up around the motor. If you cannot see this, then there is obviously a problem with the water pump or pump impeller that needs to be corrected to prevent the outboard overheating.
