SOURCE: stainless steel band won't snap into my watch
Stainless steel bracelet ends (so called wings) must be curved flush to the watch case.
Another way is to use curved spring lugs (pins).

if you don't have the necessary tools or knowledge then your best bet is to take it in and have a professional remove the link(s) for you. It all depends but sometimes if you take it to Macy's or Neiman's they will do it for free.

To remove some links: If you don't have special tool, at least you have to have something really hard and thin (like the pin you use to post notes on the cork board). Put that pin in to the tiny hole between links where the bracelet pin is and then press/push it forward (follow arrow direction as shown on the inside of the bracelet links.) When the bracelet pin comes out at one end, pull it out of that end totally.
After removing one links, connect the two links next to each other by placing the bracelet pin back into the hole and push it to the other end.
To add some links: You have to have spare links and do the same way with the pin to attach more links.

Cartier does not police watches. On the contrary, questions about how you obtained the watch could result in a libel/defarmation of character lawsuit against them. They are way too smart to fall for that trap. They are not the police. By the way their records are private and they would never engage in a witch hunt that could come back and bite them in their very very deep pockets. What that other guy said here is not true. (see more of my comments on this in my answer to the Pathere watch owner looking for links).
