Kenmore Microwave model 721 62624200

The two light bulbs that serve as a light and night light have blown on my Kenmore over the range microwave (model #721 62624200). I have the replacemant bulbs from Sears, but when I install them they stay on in the night light settinging and I am unable to put them on high or turn them off. Any idea why this is?

Thank you.

Different model number (721 80593402), same problem. Sears came out for a very high price and said I might as well buy a new microwave by the time they charged me for a replacement motherboard and labor. The microwave was only one year old when the problem began.

We see this a lot. The problem is almost certainly on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

On this one, the lights are controlled directly from the mother board. If they can't be shut off then the problem is in the board and will need to be replaced. The control board assembly costs $115.49 and part # is 4781W1M307C. You can get it at http://www3.sears.com/.

Covers over cooking/night lights are melting

I have a microwave above my stove also but it has not done what yours is doing. I would try a lower watt bulb since it would not give off as much heat. You may need to replace the lens or else just take it out and get rid of the problem altogether. You would have a brighter light anywas even if you kept the same bulb. Most of those bulbs are florescent and do not put out much heat anyway and seldom cause heat problems, esp. giving off enough heat to melt something.
