There should be a line to show you on the inside of the kettle where the watermark is.

My kettle light goes on but water will not heat .

in this case i would say the element has burned out they are not a servicable unit and would be cheaper to replace than fix

I think that standards require an auto-shutoff on electric pots to keep the component from softening down. You could override the shutoff by either taping over the switch or utilizing an elastic band. You can check deep details on electric kettle review sites.

disassemble power switch and clean it with sand paper and spirit, if doesn't help, replace power switch
