All figures put in do not register once for all. You need to set figures each and every time once you open or close the camera.

YOUR PROBLEM SHOULD BE OVER! ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR CAMERA IN THE COMPARTMENT WHERE THE TWO BATTERIES GO IS A SMALL DOOR. THIS IS THE CLOCK BATTERY DOOR! YOUR CLOCK BATTERY MUST BE DEAD OR MOSTLY DEAD. AT LEAST IT IS WORTH CHECKING OUT. THIS IS THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE OF TIME DATE FAILURE BECAUSE IT WILL RUN WITH THE MAIN BATTERY POWER WHEN THE CAMERA IS ON, BUT WHEN YOU TURN IT OFF, THIS SMALL BATTERY IS SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE TIME, DATE CURRENT IN THE OFF MODE AND IT IS DOING IT! CHECK IT OUT AND SEE IF THIS DOESN'T SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM. GOOD LUCK! HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU!!

SOURCE: I am trying to set time and date on a calculator
OK, I bought one over the weekend just for chuckles. I figured it out.
On the top of the calculator there is a key that shows a little clock. Punch it once and the date appears...like 01-01-2000 or somesuch. Press it again and the time shows up..
Hold the time set key (=) down for a second until the first zero starts to flash. All you have to do is start punching in the time. When you are done press the time set key again. Voila!
Punch the key with the little clock again and the date shows up. Hold down the time set key for a second like explained above until it starts flashing. Enter the date with the key pad numbers. Done!
I couldn't figure this out either till I looked above each key (didn't notice what it said). Anyway, look real close.
Hope it works out for all and everyone finds this solution...

Open up your battery door, and you'll notice another tiny door labeled "CR1220". Pry open that door with your fingernails, and you'll find a little button watch battery that keeps the time settings for your camera. It's time for a new battery. Take that little battery down to your local drug store (Walgreens or Rite-Aid). Should only cost about $4. Note that Walmart is more expensive for these type of batteries, and drug stores are usually cheaper (I know, it's hard to believe).

You have to change the 'date battery'. Use the user manual to find its location.
Mine is Canon A520, located beside the cable link sockets. Battery is CR 1220.
