It might be the part that goes directly to the transmission. Its right under the speed censor. It has two hoses attached to it, and three 10mm bolts. To remove it, first remove the cable attached to the speed sensor, then remove the two hoses (power steering fluid will spill), remove the three bolt, After that's off, you have to wiggle it out, which might be really hard because sometimes it comes out easy and sometimes it doesn't. This piece has a gear at the bottom that could have worn out, and replacing the top part alone might not solve the problem. Hope this helps, good luck.

P.S. when this is out, you cant drive the car.

I have a 1996 Honda Accord with 268k miles that sputters at the same timethe speedometer needle fluctuates wildly. But I do have a new Vehicle Speed Sensor. This typically only happens when the engin

I am no Honda expert, but a similar problem happened to my ex sister in-laws Ford Taurus. The speed odometer would jump around and it had trouble shifting (automatic transmission). After driving it I changed out the speed odometer sensor on the transmission and it's been fine ever since. I changed out the sensor because if the cars computer cannot tell how fast the car is traveling then fail safes in place go into effect and the computer will do it's best to keep the cars rpm's down based on the speed indicator and not let it shift or shift properly either. If it's getting false speeds then it will shut down the motor when the speed gets to high and allow it to run as the speeds fall (jumping speed odometer needle). It effects the transmission shift points also. It will either shift erratically or not shift out of say 2nd gear, so that the cars engine can't get damaged based on what signal the speed sensor is sending the computer.

Speedometer stuck at 20 miles an hour?

My 96 did the same thing. The speed sensor is and was fine -- the problem is an open circuit in the wires inside the gauge itself.

The Chilton's manual has pretty good instructions on how to replace the instrument cluster. You can buy just the speedometer gauge, or an entire instrument cluster for $100 or so on eBay. Just be sure you get a cluster that matches your model and trim line -- the LX and DX have different clusters, and of course the automatic and the 5-speed are different as well.

Do be sure to disconnect the battery before you begin the project, as there's a (slim) chance you can discharge the airbags if you don't

1995 honda accord speedometer and odometer not working

Sounds like either your speedometer cable, your nylon gear on the side of the tranny where the cable ties in, or the odometer itself is shot. One of those three will set you straight. If you are able, remove the cluster, take the cable off the back, and pull it out of the sheath. You will see if its broken or not from there. If not, slide it back into the sheath, then you have to find out where the sheath meets the tranny, and pull it off of there. Then, you can get someone else to watch the speedo as you turn the cable from the bottom. If it works, great, if not, then its your cluster/odometer/speedo. If it does work, the small gear in the transmission is shot.
