is the player connected to its power pack, plugged in?
try all USB ports? or is it using eSATA port, no port type stated.
USB, when plugged in does windows (is it windows) go BINGBONG

does it show up in device manager
does it show up in Disk manager?
last would be "This PC" local explorer working and see a disk there.

Home burned, MP3 music on CD or DVD?
store bought DVD ,say starwars DVD real not a RIP.
always test with real CD/dVD first, not burned copies .
then last we check that DVD-R worrs or CD-r burned disks play.
what player are you using,? I use VLC , only.
Have you tried replacing the CDrw drive? It sounds like the write mechanism in it is toast. You can find a replacement drive on ebay. Just put in your laptop's model and say something like "HP DV1000 cdrw drive". Or you can purchase an external drive that plugs into your usb ports on ebay or at www.tigerdirect.com
I have the same problem with the burner Asus supplied with my laptop. Uninstall it and try this free burner: http://cdburnerxp.se/

its no high speed USB connection but its all about your hardware capable of burning some CD & DVDs, this problem is occur when you have use external DVD Drive, because I have the same problem like yours, usually like that. All you have to do is keep use on internal DVD Writer. Good luck!
