Lydia, there are notches on the side of the metal liner. Line 1 is for one scoop of rice filled with water to the line marked 1. The scooper that comes with it holds 2/3 cup of rice. There are smaller notches above and below each numbered notch. That's to make rice looser or stickier, depending on your preference.

it does just what it says . its a great feature . in auto shift mode the pot will be on high untill it reaches full boil or a pre set time has gone by .... most people start there crock pots on high and turn them to low when it gets cooking .....this does it for you ... happy crock poting ...Please if this answer helped , please rate this 3 or 4 stars . and keep me in the paid answer department . The auto button is ususally it startts off on high setting to warm up the crock and when it reaches a pre set temperature it will shift to med or low which ever is the next lower setting it will continue cooking at this setting unless you change it
