Try this, I have similar issue with the unit freezes and has a box in upper right corner. Go to the Nokia website, download their software update wizard and follow the instruction. It will flash the unit and fix the issue.
You need the contents of the \ResidentFlash directory. You'll need to rename the MobileNavigator folder and the four gpspara files (0,1,2 and 3) then load the new folder and files from a device that is working. You will then copy your old \ResidentFlash\MobileNavigator\UserData folder from your backup to the new folder to regain any favorites you might have created. You should then be good to go. I use ActiveSync to talk to the S3. I'm not sure how else you might attach to it.
I have the ResidentFlash files but I have no place to post them. The files zip to about 5.3 MB.
