When you thread the top thread, the thread will drop down on the right side of the tension mechanism and go around the bottom (clockwise) and up the left side. Grab the thread somewhere above the tension mechanism with your right hand and then pull the toward the right (as though you are going to close the circle around the tension disk. The thread should pull on the metal wire (spring) and your thread should pop into the correct position of the tension disk. When you release the thread, the wire spring should pop back to the left. Then you will continue threading through the remaining thread guides and the take-up lever.

Top tension about 4 or 5, make sure the presser foot is up when you theread the machine, make sure you can just pull the bobbin thread through with some slight resistence, if it is too tight slacken the screw on the bobbin case a quarter of a turn at a time anti clockwise.

SOURCE: Singer Featherweight tension assembly

Putting this back together is a thirty second job if you have done it a hundred times. If you have never done it but have mechanical aptitude, it may be a challenge.

Whatever you do, don't bend the check spring out of shape!

Below is a link to the Singer site with the schematic for reassembly. When placing the check spring back in place, place it in about the 6 o'clock position with no tension so that it has a fair amount of check before pulling it up in place..

When setting the tension, at a setting of "1" the tension disks should just be slightly compressing the beehive spring. "0" is almost no tension at all. Normal sewing is 5.

Get all of the parts together and push in the cup with the numbers while screwing on the knurled nut taking care to get the pin in one of the holes.

Loose tension

Hello,
Here are a couple of things to try.

*Re-thread your machine

It may be threaded incorrectly. And when you rethread it, make sure your thread goes in
between your tension disks. (If you don’t know where your tension disks are, consult your
machine’s manual.)

*Check your tension disks for dirt or lint
Lint or dirt between your tension disks may be keeping your tension from working properly.
Clean out any you find.
Hope this helps.

Replace the needle thread tension dial

If the entire assembly has fallen out you will find if you remove the top left hand cover that there is a small screw in the casting where the tension assembly goes, replace the tension body to the correct position and tighten the little screw.

How do I thread a singer / 20u professional?

TTN tension, take up, needle.
Beginning with the spool, guide the thread through the thread guides to the tension assembly. Pull the thread through the tension assembly and test it to make sure the tension is working correctly.
(To do this test, adjust your tension setting to normal or medium or 5 or something in the middle. Raise the presser foot and pull the thread through the tension. It should pull easily!! Lower the presser foot and pull the thread. It should pull noticeably harder.) If it passes this test, continue up through the take up lever, then down through the thread guides to the needle. Make sure your needle is fully inserted and turned the correct way. This is an Industrial machine and the needles do not have flat sides. The long groove goes to the front of this machine and it threads front to back.

I have a singer futura ce-250/ce-350 machine.

You need to do a tension test
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} Tension assembly test. To do this test.
It should pull noticeably harder.)
If it doesn’t work this way then you probably have a piece of thread or lint stuck inside the tension discs. To remove it, turn the tension to 0 zero and raise the presser foot.Using a small screwdriver, open the space between the discs and spray with canned or compressed air. The stuff should come out. Do the tension test again to make sure you got everything and then try sewing again.

If you have a newer style drop in bobbin or your bobbin case loads in the front then the rule is FLAT to the BACK.
