TAD2012 Quick Reference Guide

To Install
1. Open the battery door with a ballpoint pen. Install one 9-volt alkaline battery (not included)
and replace cover.
2. Plug the telephone line cord (connected to the back of the TAD2012) into the modular wall
jack.
3. Plug AC adapter into standard 120-volt outlet. Plug your phone directly into an outlet, not into
an extension cord.

Answering System Operation

Recording Your Personal Greeting
1. Press and hold down the GREETING control.
2. After the beep, speak towards the front of the base; you have 30 seconds.
3. When finished, release button. Your unit will play back your greeting and
reset to answer incoming calls.
4. Adjust volume control on the side of the unit to set the speaker to the desired level.

Select the Number of Rings
Choose 2,4 or TS (Toll Saver), which programs the number of rings that you want before your unit answers.

To Play Back Your Messages
1. When the message indicator flashes, you have received messages.
2. To hear your messages, press and release the PLAY control. Your unit will automatically
reset after messages are played.

To Save Your Messages
After the last message and 2 beep tones, press the STOP/SAVE control.

IN CASE OF POWER FAILURE OR IF ANSWERING SYSTEM IS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY

If a power failure occurs or the plug comes out of the wall, your unit will shut down until the power is restored. One 9-volt battery must be installed to retain your personal greeting message and incoming messages during the power failure. Occasionally outside factors, such as power surges, may adversely affect the unit. If the unit is not operating properly or if the light continues to flash once power is restored, try these steps:
1. Unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet.
2. Remove the 9-volt battery. Replace with a fresh 9-volt battery.
3. Plug AC adapter back into power outlet.
4. When your unit is initially plugged in, it will check its memory for approximately 3 seconds.
Three deep tones will be heard if you attempt to record a greeting message before this
period.
5. Record a new greeting message.

Indicator Status: Message indicator is consistently flashing slowly.
Reason: No greeting message has been recorded.
Action: Record your greeting.

Indicator Status: Message indicator flashes rapidly.
Reason: A 9-volt alkaline battery (not included) has not been installed or needs to be replaced.
Action: Install a fresh 9-volt alkaline battery. (Battery provides power failure backup. Unit is functional without it).

Indicator Status: Message indicator flashes to indicate number of messages received,
and then repeats.
Reason: Messages have been received.
Action: Press PLAY control to hear your messages.

Indicator Status: Message indicator is lit solid.
Reason: System is in Answer Mode.
Action: No action required. Unit is ready to receive calls.

SOURCE: Remote retrieval of messages

Call your phone number. After the greeting is finished and you hear the beep to leave a message push 123 on a touch tone phone and you will be given a list of things you can choose to do including listening to messages. 123 is the default security code unless the security code has been changed. Since you dont know how to retrieve messages Im assuming the default security code has never been changed.

If 123 is not the default security code and you dont know what the code is, you can change your code in the setup menu. You get to this by pushing the stop/set button on the answering machine and holding it for a couple of seconds. Since GE doesnt offer a downloadable manual for the 29878GE1 you should probably take a look at the manual for the 29875GE1 which is basically the same model with the addition of a digital message counter. Hope this helps.

Call your phone number where you have the answering machine connected.

After you here the beep that follows your greeting or during your greeting before the beep enter your security code. It is factory set at 123.

It will recognize your code and begin playing the remote function.

Follow the instructions from there to hear your messages.

Problem with GE 29875 ANSWERING MACHINE

My reliable GE 29897GE2-A speakerphone w/ digital answering machine works perfect on my AT&T landline, BUT the answering machine does NOT work when connected to my Vonage VDV21-VD line (w/ voicemail and call forwarding disabled). I called Vonage Customer Support to inquire about this from their website:

"Can I use my own answering machine instead of Vonage server based voice mail?
If you wish, you CAN use your existing answering machine with Vonage. All you need to do is DISABLE Vonage’s server based voicemail system by logging into your account at www.vonage.com, and clicking on features. The voicemail menu will allow you to disable the entire Vonage voicemail system."

Vonage Customer Support was clueless. The only resolution offered was their suggestion that I might contact the manufacturer (GE-licensed Atlinks USA, Thomson)... lol, good luck with that!

So I installed a GE in-line "DSL Phone Line Filter" between the Vonage VDV21-VD and the GE 29897GE2-A, BUT the answering machine still does NOT work. It appears that Vonage is simply incompatible with the answering machine despite Vonage's bold claims to the contrary.

GE 29875 constantly displays digit 8

I found the manual and it told me to unplug the machine both from the back and the socket itself. I did try just unplugging the machine from the back and it would not reset, but when I did BOTH things (which seems silly)...it worked and reset itself. It worth giving it a try...

# 8 in lcd display ,answering machine ge 29875

An overnight rest seemed to cure it. Context - I have a fax machine also hooked up to it that kicks in when it hears the fax signal. I disconnected it overnight while "resting" the answering machine. When the answering machine returned to normal this morning, I hooked up the fax again. So far so good.
