Make sure the feed dogs are not in the dropped position (for darning).

If it is very light-weight fabric, most machines will have a presser foot pressure adjustment that will increase the presser foot's pressure on the feed dogs, thus pulling the fabric through better.

Make sure the feed dogs are clean--no debris stuck between the teeth, under the feed dogs, or around the bobbin case. If it is an older machine that has been used a lot, the feed dogs could be worn down and need replacement or adjustment. (Do not run the machine with the presser foot directly on the feed dogs. This will cause excessive wear to the feed dogs and the presser foot.)

My 880 is puckering when I stitch

Puckering is usually a result of incorrect tension, ie too tight. Be sure you are using a new needle and thread that are compatible with the fabric you are stitching. A heavier thread like Coats & Clark cotton-wrapped polyester may be too thick for sewing silk. Another thing you may want to check is the presser foot pressure adjustment (the amount of pressure the presser foot applies to the fabric and feed dogs). This should be discussed in your user's manual. Something else that may help is using a walking foot or teflon foot that allows the fabric to advance smoother, rather than the presser foot "pushing" the fabric as it advances through the machine.

Another thing that may be contributory is the type of fabric. Some fine fabrics, ie silk, chiffon, have a natural tendency to pucker.

My Singer 9420 is not advancing the fabric. The feed dogs move without fabric?

Are you sure the feed dogs have not been accidently lowered? They will still move when lowered but not feed the fabric.

Fabric not advancing

run you finger over the feed dogs under the foot - can us feel them above the surround? if not, you have placed your machine into free style sewing, and the feed dog does not advance the fabric in this mode. Look in your manual and see where the feed dog gets lowered/raised - raising it again should solve your problem.

Singer Advance: Buttonhole getting stuck and not advancing fabric

make sure the buttonhole lever is pulled down
make sure to use the right needle for the fabric being sewed
make sure the to thead has not come off the thread take up lever
also could be a problem with the feed dogs, look in the manual
and see where the feed dog lever is and check to see if it's in the
up position, if the feeddogs are in the up position then the feeddogs need to be checked to see if they need to be adjusted.

How old is this machine? At zero setting of stitching length the fabric wouldn't move. There may be problem in stitching length mechanism or the fabric feeding mechanism is wornout.

Not advancing fabric

Try taking a hair dryer and holding it on the front where your reverse lever is located. I had that happen on one of my Kenmore's and it worked. Other wise, it may be the motor or gear. At least the heat method will not cost you anything to try. Good Luck.

IDT foot bunching up fabric

Hi Gramma Rosie,

The bunching up of fabric is due to either:

1. Obstruction in front where the fabric has to move forward (in which case you should tug a bit on the front end of the fabric as it goes ahead.)

2. The pressure foot (that pinches the fabric between the advancer teeth and itself), is either too loose or too tight. (It depends on how thick is the fabric and how many layers of fabric are you trying to pas between the IDT foot and advancer teeth) For that you need to tighten or loosen the rotary bolt on top. Its generally connected to the foot like a shock absorber having a high tension spring.

3. The fabric advancer teeth are not moving sufficiently. This you need to rectify by adjusting the up-down lever at the right that is rsponsible for fast & slow advancing of the cloth & accordingly the stitches will be longer or shorter.

I don't think it should be too much of a task for you to solve.

Good luck Rosie.

Fabric doesn't advance

Have you checked your feed dog position? The fabric will not advance if the feed dogs are in the down position. For the machines which don't have the raise/lower feed dog capability, there is a plate that covers the feed dogs and must be removed to advance the fabric when sewing.
