I have had my camera since around May of this year. It has worked fine up until one week ago. My camera was running low on batteries, but i turned it on and it said memory card error. I switched to veiw mode and it said the same thing but also said "memory card locked". I took out my card and saw that it was not switched onto the lock mode so I found this strange. I put new batteries in my camera and the same thing happened. I then went to Black's and bought a new memory card, they tried my old one out on one of the stores PowerShot models and it still didn't work so I figured it was just the card. I bought a new card and brought it home and now the SAME thing is happening. What is going on?
There most definitely is a solution to this problem. Follow this link for a step by step fix for the memory card error. It requires taking the camera apart but if the warranty is expired you have nothing to lose. Fix worked fine for me.

My camera says " MEMORY CARD ERROR"
Exact same thing
When my camera is turned on it reads "memory card locked" and then when you turn in back on it says "memory card error". I put a new memory card in the camera, and it continueds to have the same message. My camera is about 6 months old. Please respond with any and all suggestions!
Same camer, same problem.
My son tried another memory card in his Canon PowerShot S3 IS but it wouldn't go in & when he replaced the other card got the message Memory Card Error. In review mode it says card locked. Checked card & it isn't. As I gave him camera I offered to try & sort it. Tried variety of fixes including trying to reformat the card - camera won't allow me, trying another card - same error message, leaving card out of camera for a day - no change (someone swore this worked on an Ixus!) Read that Ixus 400 had same prob but was solved by removing then replacing internal battery - Canon now pay for fix on Ixus!! Help needed please.
I've had my camera for about a year and a half and this Memory Card Error just popped up. I've concluded that it is not the card (that card works everywhere else) and it's not the batteries (those are brand new) so the problem is the camera. There is a way to send it in to Canon to get fixed but it's $119 + 8 for shipping. Their phone number is 1-800-828-4040
I'm going to be brave and try a do-it-yourself fix, pop it open and replace the internal battery before I mail it off and spend the money.
Hey, I had the same problem but just noticed that the little slide switch on the memory card was on Lock. Check the slide switch to see if the card is set to lock. Good Luck !!
