When i turn on the camera ( sony DSC W120) the shutter opens and

Fist charger your SONY Cyber-shot DSC-W120 battery and clean the connect place of the battery and camera. Please make sure that the battery has been charged by the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W120 charger. Li-ion batteries life is about 2-3 years, and if you have stored your battery with no power for a long time, the battery maybe has been damaged. When store Li-ion batteries you should charged it at about 40% first.

The problem is in the lens housing, the shutter is closed and not working because the motor that runs it has seized, or the gears have jammed. The only solution is bring it to a camera technician to see if he can repair the lens.

When shooting dark clothing without flash, use a tripod because the shutter speed will be slower causing the blur effect from camera movement.

Option 1:

Try Initializing the Camera as follow; Initializing the Camera will reset the settings of the Camera to the factory settings including date and time. It will not delete any data saved in the Camera.

Press the Home button on the Camera. Then, select the SETTINGS -> MAIN SETTINGs -> MAIN SETTINGS 1 -> INITIALIZE -> OK.

Option 2:

If issue persists try Power reset the Camera by removing the battery from the Camera and inserting it after 1 minute.

If the issue still persists then Service may requires to resolve it.

try to remove the battery for a few minutes this should refresh its system once you power it up again.

after you input date and time, move to 'ok', then press 'set'

I fixed this issue with my Sony Cybershot by gently (carefully) hitting the camera 3 times against a carpeted bench with the lens retracted and the camera turned off. It seems the lens gears were stuck. Now the camera works fine again.
