On many washers, CL is child lock. This feature locks the most of the front panel buttons; it's useful when you clean the control panel. It also keeps small children from starting the washer with a pet (or sibling) in the unit.
Look on the control panel for a small lock icon or the words Child Lock. This will be in a much smaller font than most of the icons/text on the washer. You need to press and hold the appropriate button or pair of buttons to disable the lock. If a pair of buttons are used, the lock icon will be in the middle of a line between the buttons.
Please add a comment with the specific make/model of your washer if you would like more information about cancelling the lock. On my washer, the CL will remain on even if you unplug the washer for several minutes.
