Where is the light bulb in an old Sharp Carousel Microwave?

How do I change the lightbulb in an old Sharp Carousel Microwave?  I feel stupid but I can't find the old bulb that just quit working.

  • Karen Goggin Dec 01, 2007

Our old Sharp Microwave light bulb has been replaced.  After hearing from you, I asked my son to remove the outer casing of the microwave, after unplugging it of course.  There were 4 screws to remove and the case lifted off. The bulb was at the top/center/front of the unit.  Unscrewed the old bulb and replaced it with           GE's "indicator 25" (25 watt bulb) "Specialty 90466 for microwave oven which I found at our local Wal-Mart Superstore in the lightbulb dept.  Thanks for your help!

    Thank you so very much!

Microwave_svc's site is awesome! I was able to get all the help I needed for a similar Sharp Carousel microwave. My bulb was simply loose in the socket base causing intermittent bulb lighting. Microwave_svc's helpful links got me to the service manual and, along with a nice set of "tamper-proof" screw compatible TORX bits I bought at HarborFreight, I was easily able to get cover off, remove bulb socket, tighten bulb, re-install bulb socket, button unit back up, and, voila, the light now works without intermittent blinking. FIXYA!!!!

Many thanks to guru microwave_svc!!!!!!!

Had to replace bulb in my Sharp Carousel (R-309J) Didn't have the proper torx (with a center pin) driver for the two "tamper proof" screws, so I drilled the center pin off and was then able to get the screws off. The bulb was a little tricky to access, but was able to finally get it off - specialty bulb with two terminals on it. Saved about 50 bucks on the job - repair wanted that much for the labor - rediculous. I hate it when manufacturers don't make their products easy to fix. Well, I guess it's easy in the grand scheme of things, just not too convenient.

Manufacturers used to include access panels in the rear or side so you could easily change the bulb. That exposed the customer to 110V connectors, and that posed a real liability threat, so they stopped using them.

You now must generally remove the outer cover to replace the bulb.

The service manual (available at our site) shows how and shows that the lamp is mounted in the air duct near the magnetron. See http://www.microwavedisplay.com/r510hk_hw_sm.pdf

Part # is RLMPTA086WRZZ and you should be able to get that generically locally but if not, you can get it form Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Check and see if you have a unit with a $30-45 LED bulb first. Then buy a $2 flashlight :)
