The engine was smoking very badly? Was any smoke coming out of the tailpipe? If not, either the exhaust manifold is broken or off the vehicle, or the exhaust pipe is broken, has a hole in it, or it is completely missing! Is it really loud?
You SAID the engine was smoking. But if you said that in error, then perhaps the exhaust system is okay, but oil is getting into the cylinders. Check for a PCV (positive crankcase ventilator) valve that may not be working right. Another thing that can make heavy smoke come out of tailpipes is a head gasket leak, with antifreeze getting into the cylinder chambers. How is the oil level and the coolant level? If there is that much smoke, it is advisable to not drive the vehicle for any reason except an emergency!
